Getting close to buying a D200. Will Aperture 1.1 handle D200 NEFs?

From PMA Apple is saying it will in the March (Universal Binary) release of Aperture (1.1).

So for the perfect conjunction you could get a brand-new D200, a really brand new Intel Mac, and a fresh from the vat build of Aperture all in the same month for a really bleeding edge (and bleeding wallet) experience!

Well, I already own Aperture, so 1.1 is free, and I own a D70 and a 1 yr-old Power Mac G5 dual 2ghz (plenty o' RAM)... on which Aperture runs well. So the only bleeding I'd have to do is for the D200 (if I choose to pull the trigger) which can be possibly 25% offset by selling my D70. Hmmm, starting to look more reasonable!

Regards,

Peter G.

P.S. I like you Aperture "Adjustment Tool Guide" Are you already working on updating that for 1.1?

The D200's RAW format is definitely supported in the new version of Aperture that will be shipping this month. We were actually demonstrating Aperture using some D200 images at PMA last week.

Thanks!

I am working on updating the guide, although there are not a lot of changes in terms of adjustment tools - mostly the new RAW Fine Tune Tool (which I'll add coverage for) and a few small things I missed about controls in the first Guide (like being able to Command-drag the quarter-tone and center controls in Levels to move both top and bottom arrows at the same time). I'll also probably add a section on the color meter since it sort of lives with the adjustment tools, and of course I'll check all the other tools to make sure behaviour has not altered.

For those interested, you can find the current Adustment Tool Guide here:

http://insideaperture.com/Site/AdjustmentToolGuide.html

It's free to download (I ask that you pay if you find it useful) so there's no harm downloading it now and then downloading it again when the update comes out for 1.1 (hopefully very soon after).

Sorry, I can't be any more specific than "this month." Wish I could, but that's the only information Apple has officially released.

I filed the following complaint the other day via their website:

"Aperture still does not support my new D200 camera even though the camera was released 4 months ago. Bibble had support for the D200 months ago. I'm being forced to shoot JPEG despite apparently-empty promises that Aperture would be updated to add D200 support. This is unacceptable for such a major camera release from such a major manufacturer. I have seen ads for Aperture in many major photography magazines, often in the same issue as D200 reviews -- and yet there's no admission that the software is behind the times! Aperture simply must support the D200 and it must do so now. Simply mind-boggling that 4 months is considered anything even close to acceptable."

It does not work with the Canon 30D either -- the other big camera release. I don't know about the 5D, though.

It's now March 31st and it still isn't in Software Update. I feel like I threw away the money.

I highly recommend that users of the D200 and 30D file complaints with Apple about their failure to fulfill promises.

My thoughts exactly. I bought my D200 and Aperture back in December knowing that it would not be supported right away, but figured I would have a lot to learn about both in the meantime while I waited on the update. Nearly 4 months later I'm still waiting. I like what I've seen of Aperture, but frankly I'm starting to wish I had taken a different route. I never thought it would be this long.

Support for the D200 RAW format in Aperture was added with the free Mac OS X 10.4.6 update which became available earlier today.

Where are the notes describing what in 10.4.6 is new pertaining to Aperture and iPhoto? I only saw something about EXIF in TIFF's but not much more, surely no reference to speed improvements in the image processing tools and the new D200 raw support.

Cheers, Fons.
