Split up trip images or not?

I am planning a 2 month trip to
Mexico and will have with me two
256MB CF cards. I expect to taske and
retain about 125 images which likely
could fit on a single 256MB CF card.

Should I purposely split the images so
that half go on one card and then
fill the later half of the images on
the second card.

This would be to avoid loss of all pics.

Thanks,
Jed

Where will you find the self control to shoot only 125 pics in 2 months?

(Two months in Thailand, Cambodia, Nepal = 4,500 images)

It was just a naive estimate based on previous similar
trips with a point-and-shoot 35mm film cam.
Now I will be using a Canon Powershot S30
and will clearly take more images. However I thought
I might disgard many.

Ditto on the self control. But note that Jed plans on KEEPING only 125. The challenge is to decide which 125 on an on-going basis.

I shot 400 images on a recent 5 day road trip from Los Angeles to Big Sur and would have taken more if I had been in one place longer than 18 hours. Out of those about 70-75 were "keepers."

Another suggestion may be to have access to a computer/laptop so you can dump pictures off-line or burn CD-ROMs. Or get a Digital Wallet or Digital Album.

Hi Jed,

BD (Before Digital) my trip shooting was limited by the dollars eaten by film and developing. I would shoot 20-30 36exp rolls of slide film per trip. Cost me $350-$500 per trip. I had to pass up many shots that I wanted to take and never allowed myself to bracket and experiment.

AD, I got carried away. I bracketed, shot panos, shot wierd stuff, just went out for a few hours and looked for things to shoot.... I didn't throw anything away. I have no regrets :)

Look into a portable hard drive. You can get a 3 gig Digital Wallet ~

Hi Jed,

To actually answer your original question.... The failure rate of CD/SM cards seems to be so low that I wouldn't bother taking half on one card and half on another. At least give yourself the opportunity to bring back 250 pics.

Thanks for the reality check with respect to
number of keepers images. I think the answer I am hearing is
to take a bunch of CF memory. It sounds like I'll find that
256MB will not be enough. But since I travel very light
I will probably prefer a handful of 256MB CF cards to
a portable hard-drive or notebook.

Any comments on the reliability of CF cards?

Thanks,
Jedl

Reliability of CF/SM cards seems to be quite high.

At ~$100 per 256MB CF card it's going to cost you ~$1200 to equal a $200 3 gig Digital Wallet. You're going to be traveling very light in terms of cash :-).

As someone who takes off for 2 months at a time with everything in a 'book bag' I can tell you that the DW/IB is not large enough to cramp your style. My IB is about 1x3x5.

Well, unless you're like a friend with whom I used to travel. She kept a change of underwear, toothbrush, thin silk dress in a fanny pack. Bought a sweater if she got cold, gave it away as she was leaving cool places.

Bob,

Your arithmetic has a certain compelling logic.

I traveled with a 6 gig Digital Wallet (minds@work) last winter. Worked fine. You can get a 3 gig DW for less than $200US. I just bought a 20 gig Image Bank (Sima Corp) for about $320US.

The other models offer more features (TV slide shows, MP3 players, etc.) for more money. I just want to bring home the pics.

Bob,

This brings up another point. Let's say you get 1 gig of CF cards (4 256 meg or 8 128 meg cards). After the trip, what do you do with the extra CF cards? There isn't much reason to use more than 2 cards (depending on capacity) at a time.

A DW/DA/IB is useful as off-line storage on the go or at home. With greater capacity and at less cost than CF cards.
