not sure what the problem is.
everything seems to be working OK.
I assume that its not meetering correctly.
I am using 400 speed film and have taken indoor and outdoor shots.

I have tried esed the 50 1.7 wide open and most all shots are coming out so dark you cannot make out what the picture is of.

just looking for advise as to what it may be and if it can be an easy fix??

also....the photos that do come out are VERY VERY grainy and still very dark as well!!

THANKS IN ADVANCE for any help!!

check iso setting and exposure compensation on the camera. If you have a second camera you can also compare the metered values of the same subject to see if the metering is off.

A couple of things to test, first check the ISO as the above poster replied, if wrong, then the contacts to read DX coding, they may need to be rubbed and cleaned. In general the contacts dont get dirty but stuck in the down position which does not change the ISO from the last film cartridge. I've been there, during a shoot, I caught it luckly and set it manually until I could get in there and wipe them down.

Also to check the aperature issue, I have never seen this with my 7000, but have heard of it. Put the camera on Manual, set for widist aperature and set to bulb. Now open the back, without film of course, and take the shot, hold the button down, you should see the aparture move to the correct position and not get so closed to a pinhole.

I had a 5000 which had a similar problem.. Apparently there is a sensor on the aperture ring (inside the camera the aperture actuator is connected to a ring) that can get dirty, so the aperture will always fall down to the minimum. I don't know if it can still be repaired (with reasonable cost).

Unfortunately for me, the lens I had on that 5000 had another problem: sticky aperture blades, so it did still work, the aperture was just more or less fixed to the aperture the lens had dropped to when the film was exposed...

well....I bought it for under $50 with a 50 1.7 and a 2800 flash.
have just run about 3 rolls of film through it, to test functionality.

ran into this problem, and was wondering if it was a common problem with an EASY at home fix.

it was just going to be a plus if the camara worked correctly

If I remember rightly there is another battery behind the steel plate in the battery box, just a small watch battery on the 7000 if this runs down I think it will cause the problems you describe. Check out on the internet just to be sure YMMV

It doesn't matter how much light you have, you can't see in the dark.

Yes there is a battery behind the plate that is covered by the battery. It is simple to replace, however you have to go slow because the two wires that lead into the camera are fagile and small, dont tug too hard when removing the plate. The battery is a CR-2016, I've replaced mine, its worth a shot, I did not experience this problem, its mainly for remembering the film and iso setting when changing the main batteries, but weirder things can be true also.

deffinately worth a shot.
since I got the camera cheep enough.
it has a program back 70 as well.

EVERYTHING else on the camera is perfect with the exception of SLIGHT LCD bleed on the program back.
I didnt notice it until wifey pointed it out.
(of course I was more interested in my 50mm lens!!!)

I found the battery and replaced it.
Just dropped a roll of film off for development.

Will keep you guys posted if the battery was the problem.

THANKS AGAIN for the input!!!

alright....the roll of film was still under developed....
I shot everything in Progam mode.

althought.....about 4-5 shots are usable....with almost all the shots being able to tell what they were.

compared to only 5 shots per roll of 24 you could tell what they were with no usable shots.

I am wondering if the camera has just sat around so long that it just needs some actuations to get back to usabilty??

so....I put it in manual mode and drove the remainder of the way home with my finger on the shutter.. (coninuous mode)

put another roll of 12 in and I will see if they turn out any better.

probably a few hundred actuations on the way home.

--did something similar and it turned out the shutter was out of sync.

Years ago we were in Wash DC and all of a sudden, half black/half picture.

Took it tio a local shop and they adjusted the sync of the shutter I think, 100.00 later all was fine.

well....
I know I will not spend $100 on it.
I have less than $50 in it and the lens/flash combo.
I will trash it before I do that.

if thier is a way I can try to adjust it myself.....I would be willing to try that.

repair expert. He probably can tell you how easy this is or is not. Personally, I do not think it is something you can do.
