Why my D200 dosn't work well with Nikon SB800 speedlight? I mean, they comunicate, but speedlight doesn't fire every time - at least on 3 of 10 shots SB800 doesn't fire (seems like bateries are empty, but they are fresh). When I work with SB800 (with SAME batteries) on D100, it works just perfect. I have 2 SB800, and both work bad with D200, but shot every time on D100. And after 100 shots with D200, speedlight fires on every fifth shot! Why's that? Can you please help me with that?

Tnx

Maja

They should work fine... Maybe something wrong with your D200 since the flash works fine on your D100. Give Nikon a call.. Let us know the outcome.

Must be something wrong with your D200. My SB-800 works great with me D200 and fires everytime. I also notice that my EN-EL3e battery life is real good. Maybe because I'm still waiting on my 18-200VR to be delivered and I'm using my D70 (non VR) kit lens this is an indication that VR does suck a lot of battery life?

Yes, I find that when I try to use the SB-800 at 5 fps that I only get one out of 5, LOL.

Last night I did a flower shooting session with the D200 and 1 SB800, 1 SB600 and 2 R200s. Had no problem using the D200 to control that lot spread over all three groups. For info regarding CR123 3V rechargeables I took over 200 shots at between -1EV and +1EV and there doesn't seem to be a drop in battery efficiency. That makes about 230 shots over a 2 month period on this set of batteries.

That's exactly what I mean! :-)
I have to say, my colleagues who 'have to' use Canon speed lights like the

Speedlite 580EX are at least 2 shots ahead (by means of flash) while mine is still recharging.

Don't say with that that the SB-800 is slow, just it's not fast with recharginig compared with the competition :-)

Actually I find my SB-800 to be faster recycling than the 580EX, especially with the 5th battery installed. The tests I have seen of these two flash guns confirm it.

I've had this sort of thing happen from time to time with D100 and D70 bodies. Seems like when I clean the contacts things work OK. In my case this usually means cleaning 4 sets of contacts: the hot shoe, both ends of the off-camera flash cord and the flash itself.

It seems like the SB-800 always has a little bit of play regardless of what I'm plugging it into (the hot shoe or the remote cord). Probably doesn't help things...

I Conntact Nikon service by phone, they think something is wrong with speedlight, but I donn't think so. I even use Nikon SB8A (6 battery grip), but problem still persist. Anyway, I am going to visit my Nikon dealer this monday, but I am not optimistic. I doubt they know how to fix it.

Hi,

Well, distance is often about similar, I cannot talk about ISO, but it might well be they shoot at a bit higher sio than I usually do.

Do not understand me wrong, I'm very happy with the quality of the SB-800, especially for hte kind of work I mostly have to use it for.
Jusrt wan to mention that I feel it is a bit slower compared on the D70

About that room of play.

Strangely enough 1 of my SB800 has it on the D200, the other not. When I still owned the D70, both fitted wel/ tigh on it.

The room of play/movement on the D200 is not a lot, not disturbing for me at least.

I believe that the flash unit of Uncle Frank (he lives in this forum :-), had too much play. So it depends on the D200 and the flash unit I guess, not on the flash unit only.

My guess is nikon will advise you to send in the camera.

William. I suspected that too but my VR/D200 combo really surprise me. I don't think the battery power is bad at all. I had a D100 and got used to batteries that lasted forever and was really worried about the D200 usage. Mine last long enought that I'll buy 4 spare batteries for vacation rather than the MBD200 grip thing as I like my cameras as lean as I can get them and not all encumbered up. If I need mass I'll tie a brick to it !!

ray...
