Weatherproofing F707

good question - i want to bring my F707 when im out snowboarding. Most people have mentioned using a Glad bag. Not cool.
OK, I've got my new F707, it seems to be working great, but it's
raining outside (in the SF area) right now, and so I'm afraid to
use my new baby outside.

What do you do (or get) to protext your F707 in the rain?

I have used my jacket, and an umbrella. But I am thinking of a rain coat kind of thing made out of plastic like from a shower curtain that will fit over the camera but allow operation and prevent falling rain from getting inside the camera. Have not designed anything yet, just a concept so far. Here in Seattle it tends to rain a fair amount, so this is something I am intersted in as well.

Hi Gabe, have you considered factors like temperature, fogging etc? Will 707 work in low temps?

I just heard about the battery dying faster because of the cold which makes sense - the molecules in the battery slow down and dont produce -
i think i need to worry MORE about falling on it - when i dont make a jump -haha

i brought my f505v snowboarding. I just put the camera in it's case, then hung it inside inside my jacket instead of outside. that way it stays warm and when i want to take a picture, i just pull it out, snap, and put it back in. oh yeah, i took my gloves off of course.

OK, folks--you are all nuttier than the fruitcakes that will be arriving, soon! Yes, you can TRY and protect your camera from cold and moisture, but you are taking a BIG risk. I have already lost one expensive point and shoot camera to moisture while river rafting, and just about wrecked a Video Cam when a relative dropped it in the sand at the beach. Buy a $8000 bullet proof Nikon, and you will still have a lot of risks outside with your camera. Put it in a completely waterproof bag while white water rafting--and it may survive, but just don't take any pictures! Buy a camera made for all weather use and don't risk your $1000 camera.

I have taken my cameras downhill skiing, but I always take a few shots and then just ski down to put the camera in a locker for the rest of my runs. Anything else is just too risky...You can get a fully waterproof shockproof throwaway camera, ya know...

Somebody had already posted a link to this manufacturer, and here it is again. http://www.ewa-marine.com/English/e-start.htm

They manufacture waterproof housings for underwater photography, so I'm sure it'll stand up to a little rain. They have a unit that they say will work for the F707. I know that bhphoto.com sells their stuff and I've been thinking about heading over to there since i live in the area, so I can actually see one of their "bags" in person. But if anyone has any experience with their products, I'd love to hear some opinions.

Which areas, parts, controls, etc. on the 707 look like water damage could occur?

Macroman-

I have the AquaPac bag. The 707 barely fits, but it works just fine. Ewa told me (on line) that they did not have a bag that fit the 707.
Good Luck,

:O Ok... river rafting is a little bit more dangerous than rain or snow don't ya think?

Yea, I only bring out my camera when I know I'm not going to be jumping myself... if you followed my photo taking, the number of shots I take jumps dramatically when I'm tired or injuried.

That was very interesting. I've known about the Berkeley professor
who does aerial shots with his kites, but this was fascinating too.
Wish I had the bandwidth to view the crash movie .

Thanks for the link!
You're welcome. The crash movie is a bit disappointing in that the general flight is rather jerky (might have been what caused the eventual prang). I was expecting something like an excessively rough landing, but that wasn't what happened at all: it went in nose first, almost dead vertical. I don't think I've "given away the plot" — still worth a look when you move to broadband. It's not stated whether the F505v survived, but I would doubt it. Interesting that it did survive falling off the wing earlier, though.

I'm hoping the other, larger, movie file might be more relaxing but I haven't downloaded it yet. I've been blowing my monthly ration routinely for the last few months researching cameras, including fixes for the F707 I don't yet have, and the excess has been costing an arm and a leg! :-(

Cheers,
Mike

I bought this EWA-MARINE UW Housing for my Coolpix 990 and don't recommend this poorly manufactured plastic bag! Cost: US$ 149,95. I tried to take some photos whit it but without success.

It is not necessary to view it in real time. Just start the download and then put your viewer on pause. Wait for the download to finish and then play it. Your browser will save the file until you close it.

If you want to save it for later, just use the file menu on your viewer.
