707 - broken flash

No, but try re-checking that you did not accidentally set the flash to 'off' (easy to do since it's not a big camera and fingers tend to end up on a lot of different buttons all the time - and don't get me start on the joypad on the rear of the camera!).

Otherwise try removing the battery and after 30 seconds, re-insert the battery, powering up and trying to shoot in a dark place.

Thanks for the advise, tried removing the battery - no luck, looks like I'm off to the sony repair center!

Kids, you gotta love em.

Cheers

Hi Lawrence:

Before you go to Sony, why don't you try a camera reset? This will reset all parameters back to default and see it the flash still doesn't work. The switch is in the battery compartment.

Thanks Don

Still no luck...

By the way, is there any magic button to press that will pop the
flash?
Lawrence, when you try to take a picture in a situation that requires the flash, do you hear a soft clicking during the attempt to focus?

Ulysses, Yep - it does click almost as if it is trying to pop the
flash up.
That's exactly what it's trying to do. But due to either hardware failure or else something may even be bent or out of alignment, or just plain stuck, it's not able to properly actuate the flash.

You're going to have to send it in for service (under warranty) or else exchange it.

The release mechanism is very simple. To release the flash head a small solenoid pulls back and retracts a small metal "finger". This releases the spring loaded flash head. If you hear the click then it sounds like the solenoid is doing its thing. Maybe the flash head is jammed? Try pressing down gently on the flash head and press the shutter button in a flash on situation. After you hear the click, release the finger pressure from the flash head and see if it pops up. Also check that the flash head is not twisted slightly and binding against the side wall.

My 707's flash doesn't pop up, either!

Thanks for the suggestions and comments here; In my case, I do not hear a click. I think I have the flash set to come on, with the lightning bolt icon in the display, but I get nothing. I did try the reset button in the battery compartment. Still, the flash does not pop up.

I did buy the Sears Product Protection Plan with my 707. Right now, the status of the 707 item (Sears#53017) is "recalled", presumably because of the BFS problem, so the salesman cannot even order a replacement unit while this is the status (although he could give me a refund). I think I'll wait a while and get a replacement unit because I really like the design and features of the 707.

Gary, I just got my F707 back from Sony Service in Bristol, PA (USA) for the BFS fix... and it came back with the same problem you have. The flash does not pop up anymore and there is absolutely no sound or sign that the solenoid clicking to try and release it. I think the Sony Service tech that applied the firmware fix commands to my camera must have botched it up and reprogrammed something that he should not have. I photographed every screw setting on my camera before I sent it in and it came back with every screw intact the same positions so I know that they did not open the camera up. The only other thing is that the Sony Service tech jammed my flash pop up somehow when they slammed it shut? Whatever, I have headaches dealing with them now... and I may just as well wind up exchanging this unit under the Sears PPP when they finally release new factory fixed units. In the meantime while I was waiting for Sears to get new ones in, I figured I might as well give the lowly Sony Techs a try at the fix... look at what happend! Murphy's law at work on me as usual! :-(

Mine has not worked for the past couple of days. I have the flash forced in a dark room and nothing happens. No click at all. I reset the camera and I also tried 30 second battery removal to no avail.
