About 3 weeks ago I was trying to download some photos with the camera connected via USB to the home computer. I kept geeting the busy signal but nothing was happening. Well tonight I am trying to download photos to the wifes laptop and the home computer and no luck. I check to make sure the XT says to connect to PC and it does. All of the drivers are on both computers but nothing happens. I tried deleting the Canon Software and reinstalling the Canon software and that didn't help. The home computer has a card reader but the wifes laptop doesn't. I never had put the software on her computer until tonight. I think she was using Roxio but none of the programs will recognize the camera. Any Ideas?

Don't use any software to get the pics off the card. Just use the Windows Explorer, drag and drop, find your card in the card reader, named as removable drive "whatever letter" and drag the files over to a folder of your choice, with a right-mousebutton drag, and when you let go of the button you will get a menu....copy here, move here, etc.

Are you saying that you installed the Canon disk that came with the camera "Canon EOS Digital Solution disk" and neither computer will recconize that you have attached the camera? If so most interesting. With mine just as soon as I plug in the USB cord the computer makes a sound and a window opens up that says "start download" click that button and it should start on it's own. Don't hit the finish button until the download is complete.

This happens to me but only if I have disconnected and try to reconnect the camera in the one sitting, actually it normally happens when the camera times out and disconnects itself. The thing that clears it is to reboot. I tend not to attempt to replug in.

I'm wondering if the USB port is bad on the camera.

I had a similar problem a few days ago. The camera files were coming up in Explorer but the file sizes were all 0. When attempting to move the files off the card it was saying the device was not ready. Although, I think this might have happened because I swapped the CF in the camera while it was still On. After turning the camera off and rebooting WinXP the download worked again. Also, I'm not using any drivers and everything just worked right off the bat.

I agree that you can use explorer to pick the files off the card if your computer has a built in reader(mine does) or a USB add on but the card reader will not read RAW. At least I can't seem to download RAW except for using Canon's software.

He may have a bum port on the camera or the cord could be faulty too. If it's new you might want to get that checked out pronto.

Win XP likes to have you dismount a device attached to a USB port. If you plug in the camera, it should be recognized by XP and the files should be available for download. If you then just disconnect the camera without dismounting it, Win XP will not recognize the camera when re-attached to the USB port. If you reboot, the camera will again be recognized. There is a little green icon which appears in the lower right corner "tray" when the camera is connected and if you click it, will offer the option of disconnecting. I am not sure that this behavior is inescapable but it often works this way. If you disconnect this way, the next time you plug in the camera will be recognized normally.

a card reader is so much simpler and less hassle... I cannot imagine connecting my camera to my PC unless I want to make changes within the camera.. how awkward to have your camera dangling from your PC... just my 2 cents and about all it is worth.

Wife's laptop doesn't have a card reader and I had never bought one since the camera worked fine.

Haven't tried RAW. I tried reformatting the card but that didn't help. The computer doesn't recognize that the camera is even there. I tried a couple different USB cords also.

If you look at the contents of a CF card in a card reader attached via USB to a Windows XP computer using Windows Explorer (as opposed to Scanner and Camera Wizard or third-party software like Canon's), you should see any and all files that are on the card, including all image formats, sound formats like MP3, or whatever. If the card contains files that are in formats that you don't have software to open, you should still be able to see and copy the files to a hard drive, you just might have trouble doing anything else with them until you have the right software.

I always use a card reader and Windows Explorer to copy my RAW 350D files to my Windows XP computer, and don't use either Canon software or Windows "wizards". It's a simple drag-and-drop process, and has been 100% foolproof.

depending on what is loaded on your computers some things conflict with the canon drivers. Scanners and video cameras are two examples

Best to get a card reader. You will need one anyway if you ever have to upgrade the firmware. You can not use the cable connection to download the firmware upgrade to the CF card.

Hi - I had some trouble downloading my pics the other night (this was after I had already downloaded some earlier). I kept getting a busy signal but nothing would download. I disconnected the camera, rebooted my computer and then I would get the pop-up asking me if I wanted to download my pictures (which was not coming up before) and it worked fine after that.

Well I called Canon Support and we went through the routine of try this and try this and this. At least they were nice about it. They said it wasn't a common occurance.
