The Picture Styles that come with the new cameras are all wrong, Canon should have considered the motifs real life users shoot... I mean, "Standard", "Landscape", "Portrait", what use is that? How about some dedicated picture styles for "Cat", "Squirrel", "Ruler" and "My camera gear"? :-)

I think they are rather neat. I have modified three for my needs - portraits for studio setup, standard for out-door sports, and one of the user-assigned for dance / theatre / music work.

I decided to shoot candids today using Faithful (skin tones + 1) and they look better than Portrait (again + 1). The Portrait mode is a bit 'pinkish'. I think I will conduct further tests with a model so I can really know for sure but Faithful right now looks good.

I also have Bibble 4.6 which I find very good for skin tones. However, I like to shoot sports using jpegs thus I wanted to know the right settings for skin tones using Picture Styles.

Cheers,

José

So many photo enthusiasts miss so many pictures with their P&S cameras, because they do not select a scene mode from 30 existing fast enough.

Imagine, you are shooting your cat in the living room with the A620. Which scene mode would you selected?
  • kids & pets: hm... only one cat and no kids
  • portrait: hm.. the cat tail should be in the picture
  • indoors: that's true
Finally you are posting to the Canon Talk Forum and you get good advice there.

But now Canon is offering a great solution. Crippling the P&S cameras, discontinuing the prosumer lines and introducing picture styles should be seen in this light. Picture styles will replace all these cumbersome scene modes.

Buy an EOS and shoot RAW all the time. Download your pictures, identify the scene you shot and apply the appropriate picture style.

So don't worry, shoot! Analyse your subject afterwards. Canon give you now all the picture styles you need to develop your RAW file to one of the great photographies shown on these forums. And your cat photo will look so pro...

Couldn't resist.
