Colors with D200 (3 Images)

Very nice colors in those shots. May I ask why you chose the sReala2 curve for the D200. I used it in my D70, but not sure if it is needed or how compatible it may be with the D200. The colors do look nice though, and I should give it a try. How accurate is this curve with the shots you have taken so far?
I'm using low-contrast and adobe III at this time.

JFK,

I had the D70 before and tried sReala2, DavidFmidtoneBoostA and fotogenetic_ev3_v42. But I found sReala2 to my liking best. I'm a real begineer when it comes to PSCS and normally use Nikon view for the PP work cos I find it much easier and somehow the sReala2 seems to work best for my workflow which is really simple to the point of me being embarrassed by it.

I tried this with D200 when I got the camera and it has worked out quite well. It is very similar to the Normal curve (though there was more of a difference before I sent my camera for the adjustment).

So far it has been pretty accurate. Here's some other shots taken with the same curve and PP.

Hi Anders,

Sry it took awhile to get back to you. I didn't have a gallery and had to made one up before I could show you some other pics. Glad you follow up on the thread and hopefully you saw the other thread I posted.

I noticed that you have requested for some pics straight out of the camera and with various optimization setting and have seen some samples

Now to your questions...Pls pardon my long winding answer and pls note that all this are just my opinions, a beginer and the experts here will have a total different workflow (they mostly shot raw) and opinions.

The camera has pre-set image optimisation like Normal, Soft, Portrait, Vivid, and More Vivid. This presets have fixed parameters for the color mode, saturation, sharpening, tone etc. which you cannot change. Hence certain pictures would look great with one preset but other pics would not. You have to experiment and after awhile you will get a handle on what works when.

There is a customize preset which you can adjust the parameters and use a customize tone curve i.e. in my case sReala2 which is downloaded to the camera using Nikon Capture software which I don't have by the way. You can download the trial version from Nikon website and use it for 30days.

I prefer to use this customized preset for reasons explained in my reply to JFK...with very simple PP using the free Nikon View, I am happy with the results I get.

Basically you can adjust/customize the settings in the camera to produce the kind of pictures you want straight out from the camera without much PP because you can customize the tone curve (even create one yourself that will fit into your shooting scenario) together with the other settings.

Also noticed you were hoping to see some plants in the car pic so I thought I attach a pic of a tree and flowers under strong mid day sunlight here in Msia.

Hope this helps.

Chew

Chew,

Much kind thanks! Your fix of the color curve do indeed make it look better than standard. Yes, I am exploring a very tough choice, the D200 or S3. I want good colors with possibility for large quality prints for a future home. Colors seem a little better on S3, and I love Fuji Velvia colors. Hence the S3 is Fuji colors. It is nice to be able get usable shots without PS, because saves time (although the magic of achieving far better results with PS is a valid choice for select few super shots).

Per my other threads, shots from D200 seem to behave better at enlargements than S3, although I am not yet conclusive of it.

S3 on other hand seem to have a larger color depth and also makes a difference when it comes to blowing out highlights, a good example of both here http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=17428524

What do you think of the color depth of the D200?

Much kind thanks again,
Anders

Chew,

B.t.w. where did you download the sReala2 curve from and is there a good source for others including examples?

Now if there were a source on the net to equal different film types like Velvia, Reala etc, that would be magnificent...

Very much thanks, Anders

Hi Anders,

Looks like you found out quite alot. Anyway here are some links. They are mostly related to D70 but the same concept can be applied to D200.

What you can do is download Nikon Capture and all the above curves. Then open a picture which is typical of your shooting and load each curve and see how it effects the picture. You can even try to customize a curve yourself and then apply it to other pictures and see how they turn out.

There is a slight difference in loading the curve in the camera and taking the picture with the curve directly as compared to the above but this would give you a good feel on what the curve does.

One thing you should really consider if you intend on printing large prints is the Type 1 banding that you would get in high contrast shot as posted here in the forum like the cathedral shot and the car workshop shot.

Type 1 banding will show up especially when there is bright horizontal light source like windows and fluorescent lights in contrast with darker tones in your shot and you have to expose for the shadow. When you print large
prints, the banding can be seen.

Tough choice between D200 and S3..
All the best.

Nice shots again. The colors really have POP! I think I will try the sReala in D200 this weekend.
