Good evening,

I've been looking appropriate lenses for last two weeks and I am weary. It seems there are millions out there, if I find just right one, next minutes I find newer and better cheaper and light one. I am realy exousted looking web page after another and thought myself why I'm spending so much time on camera that I was never interested in before.

I only have canon a50(point and shoot camera). That was I all needed. And I got in this mess---looking for lense another after another almost obssed.

Probably it's all because of this sony f707 camera, I realised. I read and also agree that sony's lense is not so good as much as camera it'self.

Canon, Olympus, nikon, etc make better lenses, because sony does not have long history as those camera maker. However,Sony is so intelligent about electonic computermore than the rest. That is why sony is winning this game since camera became digitalized.
So I stuck with sony's camera without wide angle lense and telephoto lense.

Here is my question: By the way, yes, I read someone speaking Olympus b300, but it's discontinued. I went to e-bay as writer say, the price is getting high and thougt it's not worth it.

With that price, you can buy a little heavier and better lense....so I'm looking and looking.

Problem is I don't have so much knowlege about camera and lenses. And there are too many.

Here is some lenses I was looking: canon ef24mm f/2.8d , ef28mm f/1.9 usm , ef28mm f/2.8 , ef35mm f/2 , ef24mm f/1.4L usm , ef35mm f/1.4 L usm ,....(wide angle lenses)
If it perform excerllent, I would sacrifys a little high payment.

So please help me. Thank you.

reiko, I think you are making a mistake. These lenses will not work with the 707.

First, thank you very much for your reply.

I am disappointed and was wasting time. Then which kind of lenses would work for f707 camera? Would you show me?( nice wide angle lense and powerful telephoto lense.)
Thank you.

Why don't you check out the wide angle lens Sony makes for the 707?

Hey Reiko:

I have a S85 and it uses the same Sony wide angle lens as your F707. I have one (VCL-MHG07A). The quality is excellent. But there are a couple of things to consider before buying this or any other WA lens for your F707.

1. Your camera may not fucntion the same with it on. Look in your manual. On my S85 you have to, in the setup menu, tell the camera that you have a conversion lens attached. This makes the wide angle in focus, but it disables your zoom.

2. The VCL-MHG07A (x0.7) is heavy and huge. 5 to 6 inches across. In my camera it totally blocks the optical viewfinder. You have to use the LCD.

But, if you have to have wide angle for your 707 this may be the way to go.

Cost is $109 from http://www.bhphoto.com

Canon WD-58 is glorious. I own this lens as well as the Sony WA lens for the F707 and between the two, the Canon wins hands down. You don't have to use the conversion setting with the Canon because it is a zoom-through and that alone is awesome. There are other reasons I am too tired to get into, but I'll never use my Sony lens again. It will just collect dust I guess until I Ebay it.

Hello Ed,

Thanks for the feedback about the Sony wide converter. How I wished Sony has used the Sony DSC-D770's zoom range (28 mm - 140 mm ) in the F707!

Have you tried the Canon WD-DC58 or the WD-58 as recommended by Todd Meyers. He said that you can have continuous zoom with the latter.

Thank you for your reply, as you see from a few replys, it may best that to choose canon's wd-58, I'm surprised to hear vcl-mkgo7a is huge and heavily made. In camera lense I trust canon, electronic I trust sony.

Therefore I may go canon's wd-58. I wish there is a lense a little powerful though. Thank you for your response.

Todd,

Hope the wife and baby are doing well. I am eagerly looking forward to a side by side comparison of shots using the native, the Sony wide and Canon wide lenses.
Cheers,

Owning them both you are in the best positon to evaluate them. The WD-58 is a 58mm thread, the lens I have is a 52mm thread, did it come with an adapter? Is it worth the $60 more that it costs? And I thought that what determined "Zoom through" was the camera, and not the lens.

The reason I ask is that I can still return my lens, if this is really a better approach.

I would wait to see some comparison shots before deciding, if I were you. I agree with you about Canon quality--I've used Canon 35mm gear for years--but this is a whole new ballgame. For example the Canon WD58 teleconverter was originally touted in this forum as being equal to or better than the Oly B-300 on the F707, but subsequent examples proved that false. Of course, if you can get the Canon and have the option of returning either lens, then you can do your own comparison, which is even better.

Incorrect. The comparison you refer to involved the Canon WD-DC58, which is not the same lens as the Canon WD-58. I own the latter and it is flawless. Pics coming soon.

Todd,

Thanks for pointing out my error. I was actually referring to a comparison that Andreas did between the Canon TCDC58 teleconverter and the Oly B-300. My point was only that it's a good idea to see comparisons prior to purchase, if possible. You can find that comparison here:

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1009&message=1720792

As I was just about to order the Canon lens because the B-300 can't be found here at a reasonable price, it saved me from making a mistake. Actually I have saved your recommendation on this lens from an earlier post, and I look forward to your comparison as I, too, am looking for a good wide converter.
Cheers,

Hya Todd, can you post the link referring to the WD-58 at
Canon's site..... I'm having a miserable time trying to find it
( I tried numerous searches but to no avail ).

thx.
