D220 and built in flash question (pic)

The problem is the small size of the light source; diffusing the pop-up flash won't improve that much at all. Get an SB-800 and bounce of a wall or ceiling - you'll be shocked at the improvement.

I never use the internal flash. I always carry a professional tilt and swivel flash (whichever I had at the time – Metz 45-CT5, Minolta 5400HS or Nikon SB-800) and bounce it off the ceiling some wall. This way, the lighting is even and very soft, as if it was natural. Definitely worth the hassle.

a supercheap option I saw in a recent "Popular Photography mag". Just take an empty clear/white plastic film can (film?-what's this),- cut an appropriately sized slot in it and pop it over the pop-up flash. Simple and effective.

I'm an armature photographer, too!

Actually, it does not require the Velcro strip. It has a loop that goes over the pop up flash mount in the front and actually works very well on the D200. The back slides into the hot shoe. I do not use the Velcro on my D200 at all.

Also I have found this screen works very well as a filter to preset your WB too. See my post about this:
