Just went to B&H and I am the first one to pick up their D40 got in last night. Hate to pay full price plus tax but looking at that cute and small camera I can't help getting it to play with over the weekend.
It look and feel different from the 2000 to 4040 series.

Please do a follow up post after you have used it this weekend. I an very interested in the picture quality and sharpness.
Thanks,
Mike

I just got a call from my local camera dealer....he has them too, so I'll definitely have one tomorrow to play with. Even better, I quoted State Street's 10% off price and he met it! I've heard good things about this, but who knows when (or if) we'll see a review here! K.

Do you live in New York? I don't pay tax in Tennessee from B & H. You may need to pick up a rebate form from Olympus America. Just a guess.

I just checked and didn't see a rebate offer on the Olympus site.

It seems you have to buy the printer (P-400) too, in order to qualify for the rebate. K.

Yeah. That's the catch. I do have a P-400 but not purchased within the time they required.

Ok people I have a few pics for you. Right out of the camera full auto mode no adjustment at all. All taken in my house. Lighting is not good at all. The first picture the room is very dark relying only on the internal flash. I actually took a lot more but my family not allowing me to show their faces.
What you think?

Amy, could you please post the full-size images, I'd like to check out the detail. I'd love to see an indoor flash shot of a person, maybe someone in your family isn't too shy to share ;) If not, maybe you could email a pic to me directly if it's not too much to ask. I'm seriously considering this camera to supplement my 2100 and I'll be taking a good number of flash photos.

Thanks,
Randy

Hi Amy. The pics look good.....but only you know if the colors are accurate. Are they? Indoor flash pics are hard because the white balance can get weird...are these on Auto? Someone else suggested posting the full size pics...that would be great (if you have a fast connection :o) K.

Amy, could you tell us the battery life, please?

Thanks,

Amy, can you already say something about the times (AF time, shutter lag, time OFF-> first shot) of the camera? I'm actually less interested in the actual values, but much more in your personal feeling about the responsiveness of the camera. (E.g. How does it compare to your old model? Is the lag annoying? How many good opportunities went by because you had to wait until the camera was ready for the first shot?). Oh, and something else: Have you ever taken some picture in low-light condition? I'm very interested to hear how well the AF works if there is less light. (As far as I know, there is no AF assist for low-light condition in tis camera).

Thanks very much! Looking at all the questions in this thread, I hope you still get some time to enjoy your new toy :)

Whenever I get a new camera I always take a few pictures right out of the box around the same area as reference. Comparatively, the color and white balance is amazingly correct. Better than 3040. This is easily seen by comparing the 3rd picture with the ones I took with other cameras. The yellow and blue walls were never so correctly colored by any camera I had before. White balance is perfect too. The picture ledges of the 3rd picture shows it well.

Batteries life will be a problem. I used 2 fresh 1800mah batteries with LCD and flash on every pic. Batteries indicator start flashing after around 15 pictures and took more and more time to write and start another picture. This is not good. A trade off for a really compact camera. Still, I cannot keep my hands off the camera yet.

I too interested in the battery life, I visited a local camera store and they tried to show it to me working using normal batteries, they wouldn't even fire the camera up!!

What's the drain like using the viewfinder & flash only?

Much better without flash and LCD. 2 fresh nimh batteries should last for 60 shots like that.

Nathanael,

The shutter lag 'IS' annoying. It is the slowest of all Olympus I ever come across. It is more or less like Nikon 950 I had before with a regular CF card.

The reduced batteries must have something to do with it. Did not test low light yet.
