If anyone's interested, there's a D30 on Ebay for another hour or so... currently at less than $2K US.

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1293876228

Here's the description:

Ask a photographer, be they professional or amateur, to name the first couple of camera manufacturers that they can think of, and chances are that one of those would be Canon. Ask the same photographer what the Canon name means to them, and many would suggest that they associated the name with innovation, the company having brought such technological advances as Eye-Controlled Focusing (Canon EOS 5, 1992) and the USM ultrasonic motors used in the more recent Canon EF lenses, which are extremely quiet and very fast. Key Features: Newly developed large CMOS* sensor with 3.25 million pixels, Compatible with the full family of EOS series accessories, The first built-in E-TTL flash system in the EOS series, Compatible with all Canon EF lenses for outstanding image quality, Five data recording formats, Compact, durable body, High-speed shooting of 8 continuous frames at 3 frames per second, Compact, high-capacity CF card, High-capacity battery system, Incorporates the "shooting priority" camera design, that eliminates the need to switch between Rec/Play/PC modes from a control panel, High-capacity lithium-ion battery for stable, extended operation. Includes: Eye Cup Eb, Neck Strap, Compact Power Adapter, DC Coupler DR-4, Power Cord, Battery Pack BP-511, Compact Flash Card FC-64M, Case for Compact Flash Card, Interface Cable IFC-200PCU, Video Cable VC-100, EOS D30 Solution Disk, Adobe PhotoShop LE Disk. Item listed above is Brand New, Factory Fresh and Complete with Original Packaging including Domestic (U.S.A.) Factory Warranty. I do NOT sell "grey market" or direct import merchandise.

First, please don't post eBay listings here. It is against the site policy as the site is supported by various vendors.

Second, this is likely a "scam" post as this is the first sale on eBay with no way to verify its legitimacy. I would run from this and buy from a reputable dealer - such as those advertised on this site or other authorized Canon dealers only!

I would never purchase such an expensive item from someone on eBay who has no feedback. The D30 is one of the most popular items that is scammed on eBay. If you keep an eye on the D30 auction listings you will notice that many users with a zero feedback are de-listed by eBay after the auction closes because of scams.

I had a little fun messing with some of these scammers before I bought my D30 legit. I went to Yahoo auctions and found a D30 on instant purchase for $1400 from a seller with no feedback or history. After I purchased the item I told the seller that I wanted to use an auction escrow service because of the high amount of the sale, I even offered to cover the expense of the escrow in full.

Guess what their answer was? They wanted payment by western union. Ha, Ha, that is the exact scam used by these crooks. Once they pick up the money from their local western union they are never to be found again.

So buyer beware!

Richard.

Gosh, the seller's id (ridavil) sure is similar to your screen name here. I'm not surprised that the buyer has a 0 feedback.

Wow- nothing like a first post in here trying to help someone out and being attacked and even accused... I thought the group here was a little more professional but I guess every site has it's problems.

I simply noticed what seemed like a good deal and posted. Thanks for the warm welcome.

Oh, sure. You come in here, with your very first DPReview post, only to do us all a favor with your post about a likely eBay scam. Don't do us anymore favors, Ed.

Hmm...both parties have zero feedback. I guess they deserve each other.

And yes, I know we all started from zero, but some of us don't deal in hi-dollar items with very-lo-feedback people.

This guy is typical of the scams that have plauged the D30 on ebay and Yahoo.

I played with these guys for a week and wrote an article about it and it was always the same thing...

You bid and loose, but then get a message saying the winner backed out and you have won the auction. (This is typical when the seller tries to boost the price during the last few minutes of the auction).

You are then told to send money via Western Union. Even if you try to use a service that allows for some protection, and offer topay for this protection, they refuse. I even told one guy I would be in NYC, where 5 or the 6 auctions I "WON" were based out of, and I would meet him and pay him cash for the camera, that was refused.

They also "cross-post" in forums like these claiming they saw the auction and were passing it on to people who might be looking for one.

This guy is a scam artist and a liar.

I would also be careful of people with feedback. It is not hard to sell a few small items, bid on them yourself, or have friends bid on them and then leave feedback just to have that feedback for high-ticket items later on.

I got emails from over 20 people saying they were scammed out of thousands of dollars when they won these auctions. They have no recourse.

Number one Tip: If they use Western Union and offer or refuse any other payment option, it is 99.9% is a scam. The interesting thing about WU, is that I can send money to the person selling the item in NY, but they can live anywhere in the US, and pick that money up anywhere in the US. They do not have to pick it up at the WU office you sent it to.

If you do find an item like the D30 on ebay or Yahoo auctions, make sure they have at least 100-200 positive feedbacks, or make sure you use the Escrow service. It does cost money, but it is worth it in the long run.

Your best bet of course is to only buy from a dealer or "brick and mortar" shop that you trust.

Of course not all people on auction sites are scamming people, most are legit. Just make sure you are careful.

Even more mysterious - the seller, the buyer and this Edward Avila, who went out of his way to do us a favor and tell us about that auction, have absolutely no prior record at eBay and DPReview.
Very mysterious! All of a sudden all of the "sales" by this

In general I have agreement with most of what has been said. I do not feel that one has to have lots of sales to be reliable although it does help. For example, if someone contacts me, I give them my work email address and phone number so they can communicate with me directly. My first sale was a 500 dollar camera, and the person said I was burned before so if you are willing to give me your phone number to discuss the camera, I would feel more comfortable. When they found out i am a real person with a real job etc they were put to ease. Mark

But would you agree that this particular auction stunk like a dead, rotting mackerel, given the fact that the seller was a first-timer on eBay, the alleged winner was a first-time buyer on eBay and Edward Avila, who did us that large favor by alerting us to that super auction, was a first-time poster on DPReview?

Again, I have to admit that I'm quite disappointed with the few people involved in this post... I must admit that I never expected people here to be so attacking to someone they don't even know.

I posted here because I thought I saw a good opportunity, and I figured someone might benefit from it. I bought my D30 a couple of weeks ago, and I know I looked around before I bought, including eBay.

As to the rest of those that think this is some sort of consipracy, first, get a life. If anyone needs to check on my background, my user name on eBay is eavila. (for the ignorant comment from jperilloux) I contacted the buyer in that action, and they are legit- waiting to see if the seller comes through. Furthermore, since you appear to have too much time on your hands jperilloux, a simple check on the Internet will show that I run a number of successful sites that have been around for years- there's no secret to my identity- I post with my real name all the time.

I have over the years bought probably close to $30K over the Internet and never had a problem. A little common sense is all you need (perhaps that explains your problem jperilloux)

Anyway- I found this forum a week or so ago and have been reading ever since. With reactions like this to someone who posts for the first time, you can imagine why others might refrain; not exactly making a stranger feel at home- or perhaps that's the way you treat people in real life? Guilty until proven innocent... thanks a lot.

I hate coming home after a hard day at work and seeing this kind of BS on my beloved dpreview! But, I have to comment on this one because you are so full of it Edward!

I can't believe you think we are all so ignorant that we can't make the "con"ection between Edward Avila and the supposed seller on ebay "ridavil" Hmmmm...seems like edwaRd AVILa to me. I would bet that there was at one time or maybe in the future will be a EAVILA or a DWAVlA trying to sell at D30 to some unsuspecting buyer in the future. Try to get a little more creative with your fake user id next time and maybe it will take us more than three seconds to see through your scam!

Perhaps you should try to get a new scam or go back to stealing little old ladies purses or dealing three card monte on the street corner.

Rob

Oh for heavens sakes, you can find the D30 USA model with microdrive and battery at legit dealers for 2000 to 2300, whats the big deal. Might it not be better to just ignore this post if you think it phoney as to possibly be insulting an innocent person. These forums have gotton to be mean places indeed.

It might sound mean, SC, but let's turn it around for just a moment -- if any of the answers to this post kept (or keep in the future) even one person from making a big mistake, it was well worth it.

Let's face it -- the whole think stinks even if there was a trace of legitimacy involved in it. Forget the coincidence in names for just a minute -- if someone says they've been lurking around this forum for a few weeks and the first time they post it's to point out this great deal on eBay (which isn't a great deal) wouldn't you be just a little suspicious?

Turn it around and pretend you have someone who comes to your door and says he's not brand new to your town, been here three years, but never come to your house before until now to tell you about this great deal in some land he happened to notice in the paper -- would you not be just a little suspicious? (let's not even talk about what you'd think if his name happened to be the same as the ad in the paper he was telling you about).

If Mr. A is real (which I doubt) he would have been far better served posting here for the last few weeks on various topics. Indeed, I invite him to post over the next several weeks (months) on such things and he'll see just how generous and kind we are to strangers -- as long as he doesn't mention eBay again for this period of time I'm sure he'll earn our trust. Any bets on whether this will happen, folks?

And that's the bottom line -- you don't get trust in the electronic world any way but the old fashioned one. You earn it. Caveat Emptor.

I'm the "zero feedback" loser that won the bid for this camera. As I am not an ebay groupie, I don't know all the ins and outs, but I was skeptical about this deal from the beginning. I have bought one item previously on ebay - a Canon ProShot 90 - and the deal went off without any problem whatsoever. It was, however, a dealer that sold the item.

I have suggested an escrow deal on this purchase (I saw someone mention in a previous thread they had done that as well - but it was the only foolproof way I could figure not to get scammed), and the guy is balking - gee, big surprise. Thing is, when it is all said and done, I'll still be a 'zero feedback' ebay wannabe.....oh, well.

Don't know how I'll get any respect.......lol. Interesting forum, didn't know it was here until the original poster gave me the heads up.
Hmm...both parties have zero feedback. I guess they deserve each
other.

And yes, I know we all started from zero, but some of us don't deal
in hi-dollar items with very-lo-feedback people.

I won the auction - yes, it stinks - yes, it was a scam, BUT - by the way, I'm not a first-time buyer. I just don't have any feedback. Sure, I've only bought one item - about $800, but it went perfect.

I didn't put any feedback on the seller in that auction - I should have - I see the value now.....thanks for the education.
