why cant canon come out with a full frame 35mm sensor

IMO canon or nobody else is going to bring down the price of a FF sensor that much for a long time to come
the 5D is a good selling 3000 camera for canon
I don't think canon will make a 1.3 sensor at that price your asking
but thats just my opinion

I don't think it's ridiculous at all. Every company that got complacent in their arena eventually lost its place in the market. If Canon will not fill the FF void under $2,000 them Nikon or some other company will.
that will be around $1500 for bodies only.

Competition will force Canon to improve its yields on FF sensors
and make them cost effective.

I remember a few years ago when flat plasmas and LCD TV’s where
$15,000.

why chev won't make a corvette and sell it for 15000
no matter how great the demand would be for one
they just won't do it

What competition?

Canon is the only dSLR manufacture with FF sensors (Kodak notwithstanding); everyone else is in the cropped camp (1.6 or 1.5).

Just because no one else has a FF sensor doesn't mean that the competition isn’t cutting into Canon's profits. Canon will be forced to raise the bar and introduce sub $2000 FF DSLR cameras on the market in order to compete.

Mark my words!
It will happen!

A processed wafer costs about $4K in high volume.

If you can only get 5 good full-frame sensors from each wafer, your cost per sensor would be $800.

I suspect Canon is getting better than 25% yield for 5D sensors as the transistor density for such a device is not nearly as bad as a high end microprocessor or graphics chip.

At the point when Canon can make a FF chip for $1000, then can make a 1.6x Chip for far less.

In other words, the FF camera will always be more expensive than the 1.6x camera - and this question will always be asked.

My question is this: When will digital cameras cost no more than their film equivalents?". Put another way, when will I be able to buy a FF body for $300? ;)

There... had to ask it.

If the competition is cutting into Canon's market share with crop cameras (since nobody else has FF), why should Canon respond by cutting prices of FF cameras, instead of producing a pro or semi-pro crop camera to go head to head with the competitors?

Not everybody benefits from full frame, and just offering FF with inferior features is not going to trump the competition.

If Canon is loosing profits due to competition in the cropped market, then Canon needs to find ways to service the cropped market more effectively, not escape into the FF market.

But; is Cannons market share in the cropped market not around 60% right now anyways?

Rubbish! There many fine WA lenses out there. Even the Canon 35L and you can always use Zeiss or Leica glass.
