Banding zealots & Phil's image. You're simply wrong...

Garland,

I will agree that my use of 'Specular Highlight' to describe the
circle of reflected light is only marginally correct.
It's not even marginally correct :-)
True banding only happens in one direction.

The sensor is read out in only one direction. So you can have vertical banding or radial banding depending on the chip and the supporting electronics and how they read the data out of the chip.

The one thing you cannot have is "radial banding"

IMHO, that's just good old-fashioned blooming, and something I'd expect from any camera under those tortuous conditions. Better than most, in fact.

Oh, I don't need a concession from you, my friend. We all make mistakes. I just wish that everyone would admit that D200s, whether by design or flaw, produce images with one degree of another of banding/striping. Just like all Canon DSLRs produce fixed pattern noise in shadow areas of high ISO images. In either case, there are folks who will decide it's unacceptable and others to whom it will be of no consequence. However, it flabbergasts me to hear people denying that the D200 is more-or-less systematically afflicted with banding.

Anyhoo, thanks for your level-headed response & happy shooting.

Yup, that's where I saw it. I'm not saying it's that serious but I spotted it pretty easily at 100% on a calibrated monitor. I kinda doubt it'd be noticed at 18 x 12.

Here is a 100% snippet of a photo I took that shows type one
banding. Note: this was at the Chicago Auto Show under very hot
pinpoint light sources leading to lots of specular highlights. It
was shot at ISO-800, RAW and postprocessed with ACR.

Here is a context image. It is the large light oval in the lower
left hand corner of the windshield.

This was a grab shot, I'm glad to have it!!
Agreed.
That's it, that's what all the fuss is about now that type II
banding has been identified and fixed for the small number of
D200's that actually had it.

I like your view on banding.

Yes, it can show up in uncontrolled situations, when specular highlights have a chance to blow out.

But when you ask yourself two simple questions:

1) How big would I have to print that car show pic before banding shows up in the print?

2) What the heck am I doing printing it that big without cloning out all those dang reflections in the windshield?

You realize it's not much of a problem in the real world.

And I'm someone who actually has bare lightbulb pictures in his portfolio...

I'll reply to both of your posts here.

specular highlight - I'm sticking with marginally correct but that's not the important part...

The vertical lines are the banding. I'm not calling them specular highlights. The circle of light I believe to be an unblooming circle of the reflected light fixture (that is what I'm calling a specular highlight - specular highlight are usually more point sources and may or may not have radiating lines). On my D70 this circle would bloom and cover the area of the banding and have a small vertical spike extending upwards or downwards from the reflected light fixture.

I may not be clear but I actually think we agree on the above.

I find this Type I banding, as I've said, inconsequential. This was an ISO-800 shot, and compared to my D70 a much more pleasing picture without the D70 blooming.

...As too your other post

It HAS been fixed? For the small number?

I think this is a fair interpretation of Nikon's statement...

Nikon has discovered that a limited number of early-production D200 cameras...

They also say they can fix it and there are plenty of examples of that on this board with before and after pictures.

If you would like, I would be happy to change my post to read 'limited number' but unfortunately we can't edit on this forum - at least to my knowledge.

As to my arrogance, I would appeal to this post in this thread, I call my Type II concession speech.

I have never been dismissive of those struggling with bad cameras and this post is not directed at them or you in particular.

Yes you are a moron then.

I'm sick of the pixel peepers here. Get your cameras fixed and stop being babies.

200% zooms and +4 ev examples are for idiots. Sorry but true.

So are photo's of lightbulbs.

Get it fixed and stop crying people.

Not all of them have banding. Mine has been perfect. If there is banding on my camera tomorrow then I won't ***** about it like a baby and I will get it fixed.

You guys need to get hobbies because photography obviously isn't one for you.
Wow wow wow.

If people have to turn up the contrast and brightness on their
screen to complain about banding then they are morons.

Sorry but that simple. It's not the camera's fault it's the dumb
person who thinks it's the camera.
What kind of place has this become, when people who don't see a
problem call other people who do names? What is your age?

I guess you never have to raise the EV on your pictures becuase
you're a PERFECT photographer who gets perfect exposure every time.
You never raise the brightness and contrast on your images?

Because if you do, you'll get the exact same thing you get when you
raise the "contrast and brightness on your screen".

Oh my revered, superior one, I bow down to your towering intellect
as a humble moron who earns my living shooting art and events. Oh
great one, forgive my presumption.

Good don't buy one.

If they can make one that doesn't show any banding then they can fix the ones that do show banding.

The order of people who have some common sense named me judge and jury.

You're right it's not a hobby for me. It's my PROFESSION and it's my ART.

And I've been shooting for 46 years with almost every kind of camera imaginable. And if you believe I'm just a pixel-peeper, check out my galleries and exhibits.

And stop judging people without a hint of compassion or empathy.

In fact, it's probably smart to stop judging people completely.

BTW, I had banding ruin a photoshoot and it WAS visible in the images, even at 8X10. That's what I sent in to Nikon, in fact. We'll see how it comes back.

Yeah, but I had a pretty bad one and I'm a professional art and event photographer, so it really matters to me.

I'm hoping it will come back from Melville in great shape.

I'd be happy with the minimal banding showing on Phil's sample. It will kill a little detail in the shadows, but it won't be obvious when printed.
So I take it it's pretty bad on your D200?

Dude zakdl stop talking already. Looking at your post history all you post about is banding. Just because you're salty balls because you get banding on your camera doesn't mean you have to incessantly complain about something which has no affect to my photography.
Man.
Get a life man.

Wow. You joined whole 11 days ago and already made this to be your forum and prohibit people here talk about anything which has no affect on YOUR photography! Confratulations! Fascinating! Bravissimo!

Don't know how even this forum existed without you.

I'm pretty sick of people like you to be honest. But it's your right to make such posts. Can't deny it.

Regards.
