I have a DC4800 that needs repair however my BestBuy extended
warranty allows me to replace it with either a Olympus C-3000
or Nikon 885. I could get the 3 meg pix Kodak but I don't like
the looks of it.

My last choice is to send it in to Kodak for repair. It is less
than 1 year old so I should be able to get it fixed for free.
This camera has a focus problem on the left side if all pictures.

I was just wondering if it's considered a step up or down
if I replaced the DC4800 with the Olympus C-3000 or Nikon 885.

Look forward to reading the replies.

thanks,

Ken

Ken,

This weeks PC Magazine rates the 885 better than the DX3900 and other 3 megapixel cameras. It also costs more than others. If you're getting it as an even exchange, I guess I would say go for it. The reviews of the camera that I have read have been good so far, I just didn't want to spend the extra cash on it.

Hi Ken:

I would go for the Nikon 885 as the first choice. Make sure they throw in a rechargeable battery for the Nikon. That's around $40-$50.

I would go with the Olympus 3000 as 2nd choice. Last choice would then be Kodak 3900.

PS. I too have the DC4800. Already got it repaired once (error light/lens won't extend). Love the pictures it produces. I only hope it last longer this time.

Don't know if it would be a step up or a step down on either of the cameras, but I've looked at the samples you've posted with that 4800 you've got, and I don't know how you'd get any better pictures than those! They're beautiful! With that in mind, I might would opt for the free repair, unless I knew somebody who had one of these other cameras and had better pictures than those. Let us know what you decide to do and how pleased ( or displeased ) you are with the decision. Good luck!

Hi Ken,

I would take a look at the Canon G2. The pictures from it are very good and the images were rated by PC World the best. It retails for approximately 899 USD but should get it cheaper at BestBuy. The Canon G2 would be my 1st choice and the Canon G2 uses CF type I and II cards which you already have from the Kodak DC4800.

Hi,
The BestBuy in Rhode Island does not carry the G2. I would like
to get that one myself. I can't get BestBuy to move from than listed
price. They won't consider matching Internet prices only the local
stores in the area which do not sell at a discount.

The DC4800 was purchased for around $600 so that's what they
are giving me to trade for another camera.

trade in for the Nikon. I used to own a 4800, and was fairly happy with it. The colors were great. Then I bought a Sony s75, and realized how lacking the Kodak really was. With the Kodak, low light photography was next to impossible. And the pictures just don't come out sharp, they have this fuzziness common to Kodak digicams. No matter how much I sharpened in Photoshop, the pics just didn't appear clean and clear.

I don't own the Nikon and have never used it, but I can assure you it will be a step up from the 4800.

some of my s75 photos.

Hi Ken,

I would put the 600.00 USD toward another digital camera at BestBuys that you would like and just paid the difference. Or if that is not an option, then if you need good close up pictures, I would go with the Nikon CoolPix 885. Both the Nikon CoolPix 885 and the Olympus C-3000 are good digital cameras but the Nikon CoolPix are great for close up pictures. Wish you well in choosing your next digital camera. I have the Kodak DC4800, it is servicing me well. I am waiting for the Kodak/Olympus joint digital camera using Kodak's 5.2MP CCD with interchangeable lenses. It should be announce sometime this February in Las Vegas. The joint Kodak/Olympus digital camera is estimate to sell for approximately 1600.00 USD including one lens. There will be five interchangeable lenses for this digital camera. Until then, the Kodak DC4800 (which I paid 799.00 USD way back then) is servicing me perfectly. Good luck in your selection.

Nikon 885 is a better macro camera, but has more red eye problem. I think the Oly c3000 is better cam overall. The C3000 is better for low light condition and the macro is good.

I just read in a magazine that the Nikon CoolPix 885 is the best all around 3.xmp digital camera. It got five stars out of five. A lot of people seems to like this digital camera.
