http://www.800.com has a promotion of $75 off and free shipping. They are the authorized dealers for Canon and I have brought mine from them and I had price matched using the Amex. I got $250 check from Amex. The equation is $900 - 75 - 250 = $575 and the peace of mind with free shipping and no taxes. Is that not cool!

Hope this info is of some help!

Nice. What site did you use to pricematch? did you get your check back from Amex already?

Does anyone wonder why Amex will do the price match? If they are to pay you the difference ($250) from the fees they charge the vendor (let's say 5% of purchase price), they would be bankrupt by now.

Here is a theory on how it works.

The difference is actually paid by the vendor. So why would someone do that. The reason is, if they don't do that they won't have your business. You would shop at the other place which advertised for a lower price. The theory is, if the lower price is legitimate, they would make some money too just like their competitor do. Amex is happy to do that since if they don't offer this feature, you may be using Master card or Visa instead.

I can't imagine that the vendor would pay the difference. Some of the lowest cost sites have to be advertising at a price that is lower than cost. They seem to use to low price to get you to order, then they put the hard sell on you.

My therory is that Amex is using this as a way to get people to sign up for their Blue card. The Blue card is the only one that has the price matching feature and not everyone will use the pricematch. Sure it works well for a $250 savings on a camera. But there are many things that it wouldn't work for or wouldn't be practical for. They may lose some money on that $250, but they are making money overall on their credit card business. And they are getting more Amex users by offering that pricematch benefit.

I agree, there is absolutely no way the vendor is participating in this, they would simply refuse to do business with AMEX. In fact AMEX may insure (or self-insure) against the loss, but in any event, it is a cost of doing business. Remember they are earning up to 3% from the vendor on every sale using their card, plus interest and fees from consumers, so they can afford to give back some as a cost of acquiring new customers.

And they do truly price match. I bought my G2 from Eppersons for $825, and price matched to an NYC web site (Broadway, I think) at $595. Yesterday I got a check for $230 and a thank you letter reminding me that I can match up to $1,000 a year.

JT,

Yes, I did get the check from Amex. I did pricematch with one of the NY dealers. Amex does not care if with whom you are pricematching. There are more details on thier website. You can get the lowest price from the http://www.pricegrabber.com and the way they do it is. They have some kind of insurance. They pay from this insurance. I think it is possible with Blue only. It is a nice feature. I have been telling about this to all of my friends.

Hope this is of some help!
