Can you describe what was wrong with the pictures? I've had both HP and Epson printers and while the HP's are fine products, I've always obtaines superior results with the epson photo printers.
can you post one of these "bad" pictures or describe what seemed wrong with it?

I agree with Michael. Epson's photo inkjets are the best of their type. I use them and they invariably get the best commendation from reviewers. If you have a problem, something is NOT adjusted correctly. This may sound simplistic, and I apologize if it offends, but did you read the manual? Many DON'T! Are you using a third party print utility, such as Qimage, or...? There is nothing inherent in the files produced by the S-1 to cause problems with any Epson printer. I'd suggest you rethink returning the 1280 for a bit, if I were you. Best of luck!

I agree with Michael and Barper. I have the Epson 1280 and it does a great job. What color space are you using as well as the other settings in the Epson printer dialogue box?

I have a dye sublimation printer and I also have an Epson 890 and an Epson 780. The Epsons do far better than the dye sublimation printer.

There's a lot of variables in printing, including paper type, resolutions, color spaces, etc. Before you give up on the Epson, you really should make sure you have all those other variables under control.

what kind of paper did you use? that makes a big difference too. Some printers do better with plain copier paper than others. but if you want photo quality prints, the epson can't be beat. sorry yours didn't work out for you.

Sorry you haven't had much luck with the Epson printers. I haven't had any experience with other models, but have an Epson 2000P that works beautifully with flatbed, neg scanned or Fuji S1 Pro images.

Something to look for by way of warnings about Epson printers tho... when we installed the Epson printer driver software onto our system, it corrupted our Photoshop 5.5. The images looked great on the screen but printed flat and light. Once we uninstalled Photoshop and re-installed it everything was back to normal....We have found the 2000P doesn't seem to like printing on glossy paper - it tends to leave roller marks, but I'm not a fan of glossy paper anyway.

Hi eli,

recommend the P-400 olypus dyesub printer.
for your small printing needs, 5x7,8x10 ( max at 7.65"), contact-sheets, proofs.

used the epson 1270 for a while,
and it does'nt hold up, fades, glossy is not smear proof,.....inkjet.

I outsource everything for final prints, right now, but will get the P-400 for shure, for the small stuff.

the P2000 is promissing, but it's still a epson,.... inkjet heads can clog, alignment, glossy paper problem,
color shifts, and most important slow.

recommend:
Olympus P-400 for proofs/contac sheets
outsource:
fuji frontier, chromira, lightjet.
do not recommend, crt based printer,
like sienna, and other, due lines/banding.

still be carefull, and do yor own testing, not every lab is worth it.

on the long run, photos deserve, photographic paper.

cheers, Robert Schultz

Just a note. I've not experienced any of the noted problems with the Epson 785epx. It does a stunning job on the top-of-the-line Epson gloss paper. In fact, I just stored away my dye-sub.

Kevin, I hate glossy paper, with my hp 1215 photo printer i used a coated matte paper not that heavy card stock that epson sells you, Iam stlii looking for 13 x 19 real matte paper for my hp 1700 what do you use
Thanks Eli

I've bought the Epson 890 but haven't had a chance to hook it up yet, anyone have this printer and how are the prints? Would love hear if there are any special settings for S2 and the 890. Thanks Cindy

Cindy--

I own an Epson 890 and I love the dang thing. It prints far better than my Sony dye-sublimation printer.

Here's a few observations which may or may not be useful to you:

1) The Epson roll paper is not really a good bargain. Instead, I use the premium glossy photo paper in 8-1/2 x 11" sheets. With QimagePro software, I can get three 4x6" prints onto each page. This results in a lower cost per print than with the roll paper.

2) I use Epson's automatic mode for my printing, with the slider set to "quality."

3) What's really important is matching up the printer with the right paper. I tried cheapy paper and it was a sticky mess. I now use only the Epson brand paper, either the heavyweight matte (25 year print life under glass!) or premium glossy photo paper. The premium glossy photo paper make prints that look better than true photo prints. I show them to people and they don't believe it came off an inkjet.

4) If you get funny lines or colors--clean the print heads using the Epson utility in the printer properties.

5) Start budgeting for a paper cutter.
