Thanks Mitchl. If you get any more I'd love to see them. I'm particularly interested it the bokeh. Thanks again.

lol I went for a couple months lurking on these forums thinking bokeh was some foreign language. Never heard of it myself until a couple months ago, but if you notice on the pictues that are posted here, depending on the lens the background that is out of focus can be very smooth and pleasing, or kind of rough and distracting from the subject. Makes a big difference in closeups or a portrait with stuff in the distant background.

I bought a gold ring version of this lens second hand off ebay for my 5d and have been very happy with the images that it produces.

Here are a few shots from it's first few outings (nothing special) just trying it out:

Jee, you own a car like that and buy a second hand lens....lol

I just picked up the same lens for $80,00 and looking at your frst pic I think I made a good choice.....

Did you notice flare in your pict. If you don't then you are fine. DG was supposed to have digital friendly coating of the lens (suppose to supress flare).

Hello, i have recived my sigma 70-300 ApoII last weekend and i´m still learnig it.

Some shoots, all of them with the sigma 70-300 APO II and the KM 5D:

I'm buying this lense soon and was wondering, what is the difference between red and gold ring version?

The one i'm getting is AF 70-300mm 4.0-5.6 DG APO Makro, with red ring (that's whats on the picture in store).

Also, has anybody used this lense with sigma 1.4x tc?

tnx

I'm curious too. I havent seen the gold anywhere. Thought mabey he was talking about a Tamron lens. What I saw on the Sigma site was the 70-300 APO DG Macro. Now I see reference to "Super" and "II". Can anybody enlighten us?

I'm going to enlighten myself. I just got off the phone with Sigma. The most current, top of the line version is the 70-300 APO DG Macro with the red band. The APO II is one model prior. The Super Macro moniker was also an earlier lens. Apparently the earlier lens only had macro feature at 300mm, but the Super Macro had macro feature between 200,, and 300mm, as does the current APO DG model. The primary difference is that the DG model has been optimized for digital cameras. The color of the ring was a mystery to them too. She said Japan changes the appearance of the lens from time to time for no apparent reason. Keeps even the Sigma people confused. lol. Hope that helps

My lens is not very old, but it is a pre DG lens. There is certainly a lot of confusion around the web about these lenses. The closest that I can say is that my lens with the gold ring is a Sigma 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 APOmacro super and is macro only at 300mm.

The Mark II version of this lens has the red ring and is macro from 200-300mm.

The latest version also has a red ring and is a DG or designed for digital lens (would it vignette on a FF camera?).

Anyway, my lens works well with my 5D. :)

--Well my Fellow photogs--There seems to be TOTALL Confusion going around with these Lenses..Especially from SIGMA,who don't seem to know their Bums from their Faces..lol

I recently got the Sigma AF70-300/4-5.6 APO MACRO SUPER 2 & it has a RED RING around end of Lense..I got Macro from 200-300mm n you have to be at least 3 to 4ft away...When I screw my AML lense on I got Macro from 200-300mm i have to be about one n half ft away. I can also use it from 70-300 for Macro whilst the AML is attatched. @ 300 it's a 1:1 with switch on lense at Macro setting.
Any More for Any More..lol

quote

Sigma also offers an optional accessory close-up lens called the Achro-matic Macro Attachment Lens (AML). Resembling a filter with magnifying glass, this device significantly reduces the minimum focusing distance at any focal length. Because of the highly corrected “achromatic” optics, image quality remains high. Although Sigma does not indicate the maximum magnification possible with this accessory, nor the diopter rating, you can achieve nearly a 1:1 reproduction ratio. Set the zoom to 300mm and set focus to 37.4” and you get almost a full 1x magnification. In practical terms, this means that a bumblebee will be rendered almost life-size on the film frame, an impressive level of magnification.

Where and how much?

Has anybody had any experience with , or read any reviews or
comparisons of the new Sigma 70-300 F4-5.6 APO DG Macro, or the
Tamron 70-300 F4-5.6 Di LD macro? They would seem to be perfect
compliments to the 18-70 kit for us beginners. That is if they are
decent lenses. ( I know, how do you define decent?) Thanks.

Sigma uses DC to identify reduced image-circle lenses.
KM: DT
Nikon: DX
Tamron: Di II
Canon: EF-S
Pentax: DA (I think, hehe)

DG is the name for "digitally optimized" (new coatings and the likes) versions of lenses which were originally designed for film or full-frame cameras. I keep them apart in confused morning by thinking about them as D(igital) G(immick) (no harm intended) and D(igital) C(hip).

Kind regards

at 3.5 times the price I would hope so!! :)
It also appears to be bigger, less of a walk around lens.
