But not relegating my E-10s to 2nd class.
Why the E-300 and not the E-1 or the E-500?

The number one concern was, of course, price. I have limited discretionary income so this was an issue.

I've been using "grips" for as long as I can recall. While cametaauctions did not have the HLD-3, I was able to get one from B&H at a reasonable price.

In order to get the E-1, SHLD and the 14-54 I'd have to spend nearly double what I paid for the E-300 2 lens kit and the HLD-3.

I've been continually impressed with the images posted here by many E-300 users using both the "kit" lenses and other Olympus offerings. (I'd name these posters but I'm afraid I'd leave someone out... You're all great!)

A good friend of mine bought an E-300 about a year ago and was able to get the OM converter at no cost. He also has access to a few OM lenses. He's said that I can borrow the adapter and he also has access to a few OM lenses. I'm most interested in using the 28mm lens with the adapter.

When I first looked at the E-300 I thought that it would make a great street camera utilizing a "wide" lens. This is my goal.

I'm also interested in seeing the capabilities of the 40-150. While I don't shoot much "wildlife" the results I've seen here are very good and I may give wildlife photography a shot. I realize that this lens may not be long enough but it's a bit longer than I already own.

I'm also looking forward to the 8mm Fisheye. I almost purchased the Raynox FE-180 for my E-10 but the cost of that converter was a bit too high. I opted, instead, to upgrade to the E-300 and do some serious saving for the 8mm lens.

As there's a holiday this week (President's Day in the US) and shipping won't occur until Tuesday, I expect to see the new gear on Friday 02/24 hopefully.

I've already downloaded the User Guide and have used an E-300 in the past so I'll hopefully have a grasp on the menus by the time it arrives.
BTW, what are "scene modes?" :-)

If you can visualize it, then create it in the camera, finish it off with the print that matches your mind's eye then you are, most likely, a master...

This is one fine camera. I had lots of fun and great pictures with her in past 14 months. I like everything about this toy and I’m sure it will produce nice pictures in your hands. Hope to see some pictures as soon as you get it.

Scene modes? What is that, hehehe…?

Cheers,
Alex.

Congratulations! You'll love it.

There's also the OM version of the Peleng 8mm f:3.5 (for example, see http://www.rugift.com/photocameras/peleng_fisheye_lens-for-olympus-om.htm ), though its optical quaility is probably nowhere near the DZ version, and it doesn't have autofocus. With enough patience, you should be able to find one for around $200 or even less.

Good luck, and have fun!

You know an expression "to make a scene", right?

Bill Turner:

"the last great stalwart of the E10" - buys an E300! -Those are huge headlines!! ...lol

I have not used an E300 but the pics here are great and I am sure you will make it sing. I do own a 40-150 and I think it is an awesome lens for the money and would recommend it you. I picked it up off Ebay for $140(demo). In fact it is winter here and I haven't been out shooting much, if you want I'll loan it to you so you can test it out for a month or two. Feel free to email me if your interested. Good luck with the ghetto cam!!

Mike

tell me how you like the HLD-3!! that will realistically be my next purchase if i can find it cheap enough, not the 14-35 or 7-14 :P

i use a mac.

Thanks for the kind words Mike.

The "kit" includes the 40-150 but I'm much more interested in going wider and using the non-DZ lenses but rather the OM lenses.
The E-10s will still be my "primaries" for now!

I bought the HLD-3 from B&H for about $94.00 (US) plus shipping.

As I won't have it until late next week I can't review it now. From what I've read about it, it will meet all of my needs.

We had two separate shoots today. Once again, E10/1/300 were used.

If I may comment on a few things. I'll be interested to see if you agree in the next few days of use:
The number one concern was, of course, price. I have limited
discretionary income so this was an issue.
Its one hell of a deal. Especially if you got the twin lens kit.
I've been using "grips" for as long as I can recall. While
cametaauctions did not have the HLD-3, I was able to get one from
B&H at a reasonable price.
I'm afraid I don't like the E300 grip. I'm not sure if there is an issue somewhere in my hardware or possibly the firmware, but its certainly not a patch on the E1 one. I'd guess the same for the E10/20 grip as well.

Oh well. At least its very convenient and cheap to take 2 BLM1 batteries (at least if you buy the 3rd party ones lol!)
In order to get the E-1, SHLD and the 14-54 I'd have to spend
nearly double what I paid for the E-300 2 lens kit and the HLD-3.
Ok.... you have the twin lens kit. Good man :-)
I'm also interested in seeing the capabilities of the 40-150.
One of the reasons I bought the E300 kit. Its a very, very good lens for the money. Not quite as nice as the 50-200, but boy does it produce some sharp pics for what really is a budget kit lens. I'm more impressed with it each time I see new pics we take.
I'm also looking forward to the 8mm Fisheye. I almost purchased
the Raynox FE-180 for my E-10 but the cost of that converter was a
bit too high. I opted, instead, to upgrade to the E-300 and do
some serious saving for the 8mm lens.
Same here.
BTW, what are "scene modes?" :-)
Depending on your needs, maybe more use than you might imagine ;-)
(I love the sports mode that dynamically alters the ISO)

I bet you are going to find that a large percentage of the shots will have screwed white balance though. The first thing I do in RSP is go through them with the eyedropper and manually spot a white bit. Mind you..... its the indoor shots that it gets wrong. Outdoor might not be too bad.
Good thing you're shooting RAW :-)

Oh .... you do know the FL40 doesn't work on it (IIRC) pity.

I'm going to send you an email now BTW

Cheers

Gareth.

Thanks for the reply...

Re: the FL-40. I've read contradicting opiions on its functionality wth the E-1 and E-300/500. I promise to give a full review after I've used the combination a few times. I believe that I can make the combo work!

I'm sure YOU probably can ;-)

The issue is that there doesn't seem to be communication between the E300 and the FL40

On the E1, the FL40 works great. The zoom head even operates, the flash knows what aperture you've set etc and the camera can set flash compensation.

On the E300, this doesn't happen. I don't know why, but it doesn't. There is NO communication whatever. Obviously the flash triggers, so you can set the camera to manual and the flash to auto, but that's about it I'm afraid. At least on mine!!

That would be the worst case scenario and then I'd just use my 383 on Manual.

As this will be a third back-up, the flash considerations are on the back burner. Also, there's always the on-board flash! (YUCK!!!)

It will very interesting to see what you pull off with this little gem. I am truly happy for you Bill and those 2 lenses, for the money give their big brothers all they can handle. You don't have to be a wildlife guy to enjoy more reach....

Have fun Bill,

Bill

How much was your E300 kit & HLD?
Does the HLD come with batteries too?

An E-1, 14-54, and SHLD is $1149 "buy it now" on ebay from cameta.

Hey Bill,
But not relegating my E-10s to 2nd class.
Great choice. I did the same thing a year ago. Didn't sell my E-10 but haven't used it since I got the E-300 (so I gave the E-10 to my dad who is happy as a kid in a candystore with it).

The E-300 is a very powerful tool once you get to grips with it. And the learning curve is very short if you're coming from the E-10.

Show us how you're coming along with it, and if you have Q's about it.. this is the place!

Enjoy!

'bout time, Babe!

I hope you enjoy it - you've waited a long time to upgrade and have done your research...have fun with your new toy! I am enjoying my E-300 - still learning!

Good Job,

I have a E20 and a E300 2 lens kit. No intension of selling the E20.

I had the Raynox 180 sold it and got the 7-14, added the 50 F:2

Now I'm broke but happy,

It you have the off camera shoe adapter, IR Remote and cable remote all will work with the E300 with your grip.

See you,

Glenn

Thanks for your reply..

I think you will enjoy your new kit. I have been using the E300 for almost a year now after previously owning an e10, I have the grip and think it's great, it is much more comfortable for my hand and the battery life is excellent.

I had an fl-40, but on the e-300 it only works on auto or manual , no TTL, no zoom so I sold it and got a fl-36 which is a nice flash for travelleing light (I like the dual flash option when bouncing) but it is slow recycling. My main flashes are a 283 Vivitar and a handlemount Sunpack with a quantum turbo battery.

Shooting raw gets the most out of this camera. My preference is ACR with a DNG workflow (cuts the file size in half) which I have calibrated to my tastes, your mileage may vary. Autofocus is very good...reasonably fast and quite accurate.

Cheers

I am sure you will enjoy it. I have both the E20 and E300. Looking forward to your experience when you get down to the shooting.
