Kodak Z612 - Is it a low priced S2 clone?

Kodak has just annouced the Z612, 12X stabilised, 6MP. The spec is still very sketchy but it sounds like a me-too.

What is surprising is the list price $299. If it is any good it might put some down pressure on the S2 price and may be on its successor.

Kodak already have a 5 MP 12X stabilized camera. Features-wise it's a very good buy, with a hotshoe and many advanced functions, but its image quality is somewhat lacking. The new Kodak is probably a response to Panasonic's FZ6 camera (or is it FZ7?).

The people buying a Kodak don't go for the same things than those buying Canon or Panasonic. They want fool-proof cameras with bright colors and large LCDs. That's fair, Kodak sells that. They offer some pretty interesting features. I wouldn't dismiss them completely.

One thing we don't know though is what kind of lens this is. Maybe it's not as fast as the competition, that could be a way to save money.

Interesting - So what will the S3 IS be?

A new sensor ? Higher ISO? More pixels? Faster operation????

The only things I'd be after are 1) a better sensor and 2) a better sensor. The S2's feature set was already impressive, it's just that the image quality wasn't very good.

Well, a 28-300 lens that didn't have so much CA and a hot shoe would be nice but I don't see it happening.

Felt exactly the same 2 points about S2 IS and decided not buy it when I was looking, mainly because of them. Also if u don't need the x12 zoom and buy it, that means u have payed for and will be carrying all the time something unnecessary.

The microscopic sensor is there to stay in the S3, as that's the only way to keep it as compact as S2 with x12 or more (unlikely to be downgraded zoom-wise). Maybe they'll make it x15 and maintain the same weight by using still a smaller sensor.

I think there is a big push for higher ISO this year. Canon cannot ignore this trend.

My guess would be a better sensor of the same size or a larger sensor with better optics to avoid a big size increase. The S2 was a bit larger than the S1. I think the S3 can grow a bit and still be considered compact.

I would love to see Canon going the Sony R1 route with an APS-C sensor and a lens similar to the Nikon 18-200 VR. This whole package would not be larger than the Sony R1 (2 lbs). This might be a Pro2.

If they did this, why not just release the lens to go with the Rebel XT?

To get live-view, lens close to the sensor (for size and quality), quiet operation, no dust, movie mode, etc.

Canon has always presented the Sx cameras as the convergence of camcorders and digicams.

Some say that Canon will cripple their high end digicams to protect their low end DSLR's. I don't think this make sense. If they cripple their digicams, people will simply buy other makes high end digicams (from Sony, Panasonic, etc.).

I would like to think like u but what I read about, that almost all the other brands are already involved in DSLR production plans: Sony will make new ones based on KM technology, Panasonic&Olympus are working together, Pentax+Samsung, Nikon just like Canon. If all of them prefer to promote DSLRs and stop top P&Ss, Canon has nothing to fear. The R1 thou v special camera does not constitute a major threat ('cos of its bad ergonomics) on 350D and the rumoured 3000D (might be cheaper than 350D and possibly with more features borrowed from P&S thus will be more able than 350D to compete with top P&S). All top P&S is either very old models or not so attractive like R1 or noisy FZ30. Oly C-8080 and C-7070 are disappearing and their price is skyrocketing.
