Complaint: D1X is too heavy, et al.

D1X is too heavy. Damn fine camera, but it's too damn heavy. I have
found no carrying configuration that is comfortable. While I'm
venting, let me add this: Nikon needs to redesign this camera. It's
clunky. I bet we'll look back on this thing two years from
I am currently looking for a used heavy Nikon D1X to go with my new heavy 80-200mm Nikon lens. Am willing to pay 4800. This will help me get off the waiting lists I am on. If anyone knows where I can locate this camera please let me know. Any help is appreciated.

But the only thing being sold in this years line up are Hondas, Toyotas or the Formula 1. Without a nice Porsche, or even a BMW to buy, all us people who want more then a Honda end up getting the only thing left... a Formula 1.

Think about it, you have just purchased a tool actually meant for a
serious Professional and now you are complaining it's too heavy for
you. Give us all a break Iva, you are sounding a little foolish.

It's as if you purchased a Formula 1 racing car and now you are
complaining it goes too fast and the suspension is too hard and the
ride not soft enough for you. You should not even have an
automobile like that in the first place, but you could afford it so
someone sold it to you. It's the same for the D1x camera, you have
the disposable money so someone sold it to you.

You should not have purchased that camera in the first place it was
not really meant for the general photographing public. It sounds
as if the D1x will be hopelessly under used in your care. Like a
little used automobile owned by an old person I suspose ; )

If the camera is too much for you Iva I suggest you return it
while you can and go back to one of the consumer models made
specifically for the general public. There are many light weight
models available, Nikon even make several that would fit the bill.

And Iva we are not just accepting what's best, personally I have
come from a 40 year history of using Nikon products and the D1x
fits in quite nicely as a continuation in their line of
professional cameras.

Everything in this Universe can be improved Iva, including you ; )

I don't know about you all, but I'm TIRED of squishing my nose up
against the LCD screen. Yuck!

Also, does anyone like having to rotate portrait shots manually via
software? I do NOT. 5k camera, and Nikon can't auto rotate, or
offer an option to?

Bleck!

Hey Iva I can't speak for others, but I'd love a smaller lighter version of the D1x and still have all its greatness. Also I'm not sure where it says professional cameras have to be big bulky and heavy? Nor can I understand why anyone would suggest we are amateurs if you disagree with their ideas of what a camera should or should not be. I love my d1x, and don't really give a rats @ss what others think, but I would definitely appreciate a lighter smaller version, and I know a lot of others would too. As it is I use my E10 more for casual and recreational shooting because I don't feel like hanging a ball and chain around my neck. Also I think the LCD comes in verry handy for checking WB, flash, and exposures. Heaven knows we need it with the less then satisfactory SB28DX. Wonder when nikon will equal canon flash technology? It never ceases to amaze me how some people feel the need to look superior to others. It really shows who the true professionals are, and who the cheerleaders are. Camera loyality? Certainly, but not without acknowledging its faults or short comings, lest we become religious about our cameras too!

Absolutely. Agree on all your points. I too keep my e-10 for precisely the reason you stated. Have you read about the e-20? A pity, I think. Oly could have tempted me to upgrade if the company had addressed the e-10's true weaknesses: write speed and buffer size. The D30 tempted me for its size, but I'm concerned that the photos I've seen out of the camera look soft -- all of 'em.

Hey, I plain to hang mine around my neck and go to ball games, soccer games, my children’s plays, and through Disney World all day long if needed. It's what I bought it for. But I do need something smaller, and more point & shoot like, for the informal get tog ethers where I don't feel like walking into a restaurant or bar carrying something that looks like its from a photo shoot, or for when my wife wants to take some pictures at something.

The Olympus e-10 is an acceptable compromise, but it's still not "point and shoot" small. If you know of a true "point and shoot" pocket camera that does a great job, let me know.

Here is idea about rotation.
NV4 is already capable of rotating thumbs and they can be rotated

all at once but then I transfer pictures to my computer they are in the same orientation as on the CF. This is totaly stupid.

Just my opinion.

Eugene
  • I think it could successfully be moved around. As for the
rotate, I was not suggesting the user should use the camera to edit
the images. The camera could determine its orientation and either
save them based on that, or just record it into the NEF for when
its opened. (Some of the Kodak cameras do this. But I assume they
must have patented the idea or something since I haven't seen any
other cameras do it). And I’ll state again that I think a
Lithium Ion battery option would be nice. It would reduce weight
and improve battery life.

I can't agree more.

But some people would prefer to be all 'macho' about it and call others 'whiners'. sigh...

imo it is important for us to voice out so nikon will know what to work on next...

Exactly. For those who think Nikon can do not wrong, just look at those early "Redeye" coolpix models. Or look at the 5000, for goodness' sake!

I smell a troll

Have you ever used a F2 With MD-2 Motor, MB-1 Battery? How about a F3 with a MD-4, a F4 or a F5? If you have, you would be praising Nikon for giving a professional quality camera that is lightweight. I handhold my D1H with a 300mm 2.8 lens allot when I cant use a monopod, sure its heavy compared to a Nikon Coolpixs but the Coolpixs could never get the shots I need. I suggest that you get over it and buy a another camera.
Ha! I don't care how many books you've written, that doesn't make
you right. Show me a pro photographer that likes carrying a 50
pound pack and I'll show you one that doesn't have neck and back
problems.
I'm amused. The weight of the camera is the least of the worries of
a professional photographer. I'm generally carrying a 50-pound pack
with all my equipment when I'm photographing. Even the very
lightest photo kit (35mm) I've hiked with was slightly over 10
pounds.

ws,

If you take a look at the history of Nikon 35mm cameras: F, F2, F3, F4 and F5. Each new model has gotten lighter and more ergonomic, the D1 series cameras are lighter then its film counterparts. I think some people are missing the point that theses cameras are designed to be used on a daily basis and ruggedness is absolutely essential. Sure you could make the D1 lighter but to do that and keep its ruggedness, it would probably cost twice as much!

Take care,

Hello Ken and Iva,

Then learn how to use the Formula 1 automobile and stop complaining about it. A good worker never blames their tools.

Nothing is ever perfect... Nothing... so get over it and learn work with what you have. Or go back to the cameras that are actually meant for the hobbiest.

Well that's why we should all voice out! the 'machos' can keep on lifting weight. i personally don't mind a slightly lighter camera. i also shoot with a contax g2, and i can't tell you what a joy LIGHT cameras are!

HI Rob,

I surely thought the Fs are getting HEAVIER and BIGGER! not the other way around My F4 is certainly lighter than my F5, at least it is SMALLER in 'volume' han the F5.

D1x is just an all around bigger camera. it's almost .5 in taller than the F5. In fact, only the largest of the camera bags would fit the D1x.

I have no doubt the main reason for their wight is because they need to be built like a tank, but there just seems to be so many advanced material on the mkt that are both strong and light. for example, take a look at tennis racquets these days. so light, so strong, and so 'efficient'...

but anyway, i guess we can ALL WISH! =) i do wisher for an equally strong, but lighter camera!

I think I mind the SIZE of the D1x more than the weight (and I guess they are related)... it's just huge. not that I have problem handling it, but my subjects seem to be intimated by the sheer size of the d1x.
