Ok I have always used my pictures straight out of my camera. I have never altered them using anything except for an occasional white balance correction. I have seen some great telephoto shots here that look wonderful. Are they cropped in photoshop? If so how do you crop without loosing image quality? When I crop my pics seem grainy. I can't seem to get those great close-ups. Would love to know how it is done.

Hi Teresa: I do a lot of editing and cropping (always keep the original, though).

Many times it's a matter of just "nipping" that little piece of telephone cable on the upper right corner of that beautiful sky, etc....I generally constrain while I crop so as not to lose the format, lest I need to show series of pictures.

When you crop, you always lose resolution. But you can experiment with the different options in the "sharpen" submenu under the "filter" menu in Photoshop. Sometimes it does wonders.

Appreciate the insight...sometimes I overlook the other advantages of digital images.

Cropping never should reduce resolution or image quality. If you resample by enlarging or shrinking then the resolution is lost in the interpolation to resample. Beware of what you see on your monitor unless it is displayed at full resolution of the image.

You're right, Ron. I didn't explain it well. What happens in my case is I always work with series of photos, meant to be printed usually. Then if I crop, I have to resize one way or another.
