Wolverine 60GB all in one media player for $349 at Costco.com

Hi Sheri,

Headphones are typical little earbuds, they sound OK, but regular "good" headphones sound much better of course. MP3s sounds great to me, I think its more dependent on the headphones than anything else to be honest. It has a nice screen, pretty clear and bright, and it can display a little moving equalizer or pictures while you are listening. I hooked it up to our stereo via the provided audio out cable and it sounded good to me.

We still haven't spent enough time to figure out the playlist and other features, but basically, it looks and acts exactly like a hard drive attached to our Windows XP system. Just plug it in, and it sees it as 4 drives (I have no idea why, since you only use one, I guess I better read the manual after all)

The case, hmmm, I can't remember, I will have to look at it again, I am at work now, but its a nice case. It won't play Windows Media files so we converted all of ours to MP3s, using some converter I had that I had, but there are tons of those out there.

The main thing for us is this....

60GB of storage, acts like a removable hard drive and media reader - plug in a media card of any type and copy it over - very fast - very easy. We needed this for vacation in Summer. With a Canon 20D or any high MP camera, its a lot cheaper than buying 3 or 4 memory cards that we would never use after the trip. We loaded ever MP3 we have on our computer so far and only used 1GB.

Easy to use - cheap - $299 - and an all around great device for playing MP3s. We will have to try videos on it next, but we already have a portable DVD player which is honestly much better for this sort of thing, but I bet it would be cool to copy videos to it from a digital camera that can capture decent movies in movie mode, and then play them on the TV. Don't have a camera like that yet, that is next. Probably the Canon A610 or 620, along with an underwater housing for scuba and snorkeling.

Timm
I'm happy for you but mine is still making its way here in slow
motion. UPS "on time" delivery is still showing as 2/15/05. :(

Oh well. What type of headphones came with it and how do mp3s
sound? Is there anything special for playing albums by a selected
artist, or queuing up several albums at the time? Is there a belt
clip on the hard case?

Thanks,
Sheri

there are many things that affect mp3 sound. the quality of the source (cd), the encoder (that matters THE MOST!), the playback DAC and final drive amp. the headphones matter less than even the encoder being used.

for the card reader slots? my vosonic does this - so I bet that's what those extra drive letters are for. the cf and sd slots, etc.

no wmf? I'm liking it more and more ;)

mine has shipped and should be here in a week or so. I can't wait ;)

My guess is, you're talking about the Vosonic 8350. Here's a comparison of the two units.

http://www.vosonic.com./index.php?php_mode=compare&php_classid=7&php_itemid%5B%5D=36&php_itemid%5B%5D=47

I'm torn between the two. Is that nice screen worth the extra money.

I've emailed Vosonic. They are offering a bookmarking feature soon via firmware for ebooks. I don't care about that, but having a good audio book on the device would sure be nice. anyone out there tried it? The brochure states that it does support MVA files.

ok, this is TOO cool!

I have a playlist of mp3's on an sd-card that I was using in another mp3 player. for grins, I inserted that fat32 sd-card into wolfie and it recognized it. it let me view that card's directory, find a folder I liked, copy to 'clipboard', exit that screen, move over to the 'music' folder (in the unit's hard drive) and do a 'paste'. its now copying my mp3's over to its internal music area!

but its better than just that. I am also able to listen to the same sd-card (multitasking inside the wolf!) in the background WHILE THE CARD IS BEING COPIED! ie, I don't have to 'be bored' while a long card copy operation is in progress. ideally, you would listen to songs on one area of the hard drive while copying photos from the card to the photo area of the drive. but it seems that playing AND copying from the sd-card works. I'm impressed.

this is going to be a hot item, folks.

this is a shot of it while it was copying music from the sd-card to the local hard drive. plus I was listening to songs, sequentially, while the copy was going on (and this screen was updating, showing which files were being read and copied to the HD:

cord to the left is power (charging right now) and cord to the right is my sennheiser headphones.

btw, the audio sounds great. better than the ipod (all but the shuffle; and its really hard to beat the i-shuffle for sound quality). but this one is almost as good as the ishuffle - and certainly better sounding than the rest of the ipods (IMHO).

plus, you can copy songs/pictures/data FREELY. no politics in this player. I LOVE THAT!

Mine is here at last.

Initial impression, it's thick! The player looks deceptively slim in its pictures. The included hard case is bigger than anything I would want to carry. The player does fit nicely into a waist pack I have, but I would prefer a soft protective case where you could still operate it, with a hard clip that would let me clip it to my pants or pocket (I don't usually wear a belt :) ).

It will play m3u playlists, which is a good thing considering there doesn't seem to any way to save custom mixes or playlists. The so-called "playlist" is lost if you power down or quit the jukebox. I don't like that there is no ability to resume the last song/position, or even the last song/playlist. Something I liked about my old mp3 cd player is, it saved information between boots. It would resume song/position and playlist. You could randomize with/or without repeating songs (and when not repeating, it could resume the random order).

This player doesn't seem to be have any searching capability, which means a ridiculous amount of scrolling to find things if you have a big collection (I could fill six of these devices with just music lol)

I did update to the latest firmware but the only functional improvement is that now you can pause a song.

The player does sound good as long as you don't use the equalizer. I haven't been able to get the covers on the ear buds so I haven't tried them; I'm using an old portable Sony headset I have. Haven't tried the separate speaker case, or remote control yet.

The screen is bright and pretty. I successfully played movies taken on a Canon SD550 and CR2 images from the Rebel XT. It would not play .MOV files (I have some music videos that came on music cds in that format).

It took six hours to charge the battery, and now the battery indicator shows it to be almost dead (after using it a few hours). Will it operate on AC power, or is that cord just for charging? Seems kind of iffy to copy over gigabytes of files while on battery power.

Things I like: 60 gb, views CR2 raw files, plays most mp3s, sounds good.

Thing I don't like: thickness (the weight is tolerable), battery life, lengthy charge time, absence of media search tools, absence of resume capability.

li-ions take a few cycles to really break in.

yes, the EQ is a joke. I leave it on flat and you get good sound. too bad there are ONLY presets. sigh. all I'd want is a like 10k boost, maybe 1db or so. just a touch and it would be perfect.

it would be nice to have a small padded case. its not hard to find small cases - but that big one with the speaker in it is kind of interesting. maybe it will be useful for something.

the remote is not high quality (printing is offset?) but it does seem to work.

the drive does start up and shut down quite a lot. battery saving, no doubt. if you hold the unit in your hand you can feel the disk spinning up. I'm pretty sure its a notebook 2.5" drive, by the spin-up mass of it (just a guess though).

its not industrial strength - not super strong in terms of build - but this isn't apple making it, its a company a fraction of their size. and to the best of my knowledge, no ipod comes, yet, with sd-card and cf-card readers built right in.

this does well as an mp3 player even though it has no built-in indexing like ipods do (when you 'import' songs into an ipod, you update its database. open/free players like this almost never have a database - they just have an inherent directory/folder structure. I prefer that, actually.

yes, it would be nice to pause/resume on songs between reboots. I bet a firmware update will fix that - that isn't a hard problem to solve.

the latest firmware adds fz30 raw support (totally unexpected by me but I'm thrilled!). updating it was easy as copying a file to a dir, clicking on it (from the unit) and waiting.

also, the usb connector is STANDARD. I used the same cable that my canon s500 came with. ie, its a mini usb cable - nothing odd at all.

and yes, I believe you can charge and operate the unit at the same time.

It is on sale on Fry's for $250 after rebate.
So far, it is good deal.

I might get one after work!!!
$250 ? sheesh!

the 4gig ipod nanos are about $250, give or take. this is a 60gi unit with a serious display, MUCH much better sound (I had a nano and returned it), card reader built in, IR remote, etc etc.

although I wouldn't trade my costco version just to save $50. if there is a problem with this later on (knock wood) I know I'll be covered. but if costco.com isn't an option, sure, $250 at a local store sounds great!

I know what you found. you found this:

http://www.adorama.com/WV7040.html?sid=11400699412518251

that's $179.

but that's NOT this red player. the red one has a color screen to VIEW the pics. this one for 179 is not a viewing screen. not the same animal at all.

ja?

FYI, I tried backing up a 1 gb cf card while listening to mp3s and it took about 15 minutes. Then I did the same card (after powering down and restarting the MVP) without listening to mp3s in the background and it did it 10 seconds shy of 4 minutes. I would love to try connecting my superfast separate cf card reader via the (small) USB plug but I don't have a converter for the larger to smaller USB connector. Copying from that reader to my Fotochute drive, it finishes in 3 minutes or less. But I suspect that small connector on the MVP probably only works for connecting to the PC.

Sheri

I don't believe it would work even if you had the correct connector. You would need USB OTG functionality. Not aware of any Vosonic that has OTG.

What is the brand/model of your card reader? Sounds a LOT faster than my reader.
