Is the C2100 being discontinued? I was about to place an order on Focus Video's website, searched for the C2100 and was given this message:

"Olympus C700 Camedia Ultra Zoom 2.1 Megapixel Digital Camera (U) #225285. The C2100 is no longer available as of 10/25. The closest alternative C700 is displayed. MSRP List Price $799"

Is this because Focus don't want to stock it anymore or is the C2100 discontinued. Anone heard of a replacement? I know the C3100 is not.

There are a lot of rumors that it is being phased out. It's featured on the Oly website right now. I think when Oly gets a good product like the B-300 and our 2100UZ, they just can't stand success. I wrote them yesterday to ask them why the B-300 was discontinued. They said it didn't sell. Selling like hotcakes now if you can find one.

Its discontinued! The C2100, the E100, the B300 lens are all done Kaput!

They never sold well (B300 exception maybe) till the price dropped to less than half the suggested retail price. No money in that.

Not to say they were not worth it but point is they just didn't sell good enough. Too bad but maybe the public realized the value of their respective capabilities too late.

Regarding the B300 lens, I think the IS/L line of cameras for which the IS lenses were specifically developed for, basically were slow sellers also and that contributed to the discontinued production. I think There is still one IS film 35mm camera being produced.

The C2100 UZ and the E-100 RS is quickly becoming difficult to find. My advice is to get searching and don't waste time trying to save a couple bucks comparing near comparable prices. Order it now! JD

JD,

Where did you get your news that the C2100UZ is discontinued.
Being difficult to find does not necessary mean it is discontinued.
The reverse can be true too; that the C2100UZ is so popular that
production at Olympus could not cope with the workload. Or like
in the case of the Palms, where you could not given get a Palm
even if you had the money because some components were out
of stock and restricted production.

There is no official word from Olympus that the C2100 is discontinued
and if you cannot believe the manufacturer who makes them, who
could you believe ?

Olympus America has the C2100 on the Product Spotlight feature
and I checked a minute ago, it is still there. Why would they place
a discontinued on that spot ? It has to be continued and probably
still making good money for them . Check out
http://www.olympusamerica.com/innards/c_filmless.asp?s=12&p=16
if you have the time.

Olympus Japan still list them in their Digital Camera Product Lineup
http://www.olympus.co.jp/LineUp/Digicamera/index.html

Need I say more ? Where did you get your rumours from anyway ?
Stop spredding something which is not true, it would definitely
confuse the newbies.

Some people feel important by trying to post a "scoop" in the forum. These rumors of the demise of the C-2100 have been here for at least three months. Olympus continues to deny it, but that doesn't slow the rumor-mongers down.

B&H Photo has the camera, as does dbuys.com, buydig.com and Samy's Camera in Los Angeles. Of the five websites I checked, only Cameraworld did not list the C-2100. Pretty good for a "discontinued" camera, don't you think?

It just appears that they are trying to empty out the last of their stock. I don't know anything official, but it sure looks that way. CompUSA bought a huge batch of them a week or so ago. I figure they got some sort of good deal.

B & H's new digital catalog does not mention the camera. I think that's a clue that it will history soon. It's a shame, but I agree with the earlier guess that the camera didn't sell well enough at the higher prices.

Mook:

After reading all of the guesses as to what is happening, and after reading all of the threads in the past where people have queried Olympus directly, I have decided that what we need here is a forum called "Digital Legends" Just like the "Urban Legends" website. We could then all post our misinformation and guesses on the appropriate forum. Until Olympus officially announces the demise of the UZI, I will hold all opinions as to its possible/probable demise to myself! Obviously, there will come a time when someone touts the demise of the UZI, and is right. Nothing lasts forever!

In Toronto, I was told by one camera store that they had been advised by their Olympus rep that the 2100 was no longer available. Another store's computer showed it could still be ordered. Go figure.

BYW, I bought one yesterday and after only a handful of shots, I love it. Just wish I could find a B300.

The manager at my local CompUSA told me the C2100 WAS discontinued for a brief period, but due to consumer protest it was put back into production.

The Olympus rep that my sister talked to last week told her the C2100 is and I quote, "absolutely, positively in production right now".

She also asked about the new batch and SDS. The rep told her SDS can happen to any camera, but that the seemingly higher numbers of SDS in the C2100 where more than likely due to the unusually high number of cameras sold. He said relatively speaking, the number of cameras with SDS compared to the number of cameras sold was miniscule and that the number has now dropped to almost nothing in comparison.

It's absolutely amazing how you keep spreading these rumors JD.

The C2100 is NOT discontinued. Not only is it featured on their website but I know for a fact that CompUSA's all over the country have gotten, or are getting new stock in.

Why don't you think before you speak (write)? You are doing a great disservice to those who depend on these boards for information.

OK,OK, Maybe the UZI's ARE back in production. Give me a break!!!

All I can recall is that from way back this past summer to presently , there has been a few posts from forum members stating that some stores quoted Oly reps as saying it was discontinued and that was the reason they were unable to get them in stock. There have been other indications too such as the price drops and the introduction of the C700 UZ, which directly competes with the UZI. Probably a lot less troublesome too. Regardless of the possible reprieve, ,I still think it has been deep sixed.Anybody want to bet?

Karen, Thanks for the rescue here.I was beginning to think I had imagined it all. JD

And please tell me Roberta, How do you know for sure that it is not discontinued? Do you have a crystal ball? Or did the salesman at CompUSA tell you the "real facts". What is this "I know for sure" stuff. Let us in on the real scoop please. Why is it what I hear and then repost is rumor and what you hear and post is fact?
Maybe you ought to think before YOU speak (write) yourself !

Obviously no one outside of Olys upper management knows for sure what goes and what stays.

I didn't think I was spreading a rumor as it has all been discussed for some time now. But when you see a $1000.00 + camera selling for $350.00 then you have to believe the end is at hand. The idea that they are using up in stock materials and are still shipping does makes sense. JD

Seems like some people have found a way to find a shortage
of real world concerns to get upset and indignant about.
Get real folks. Learn from history.
You won't know for sure untill it's too late. B300 sound familiar?
I've got one of each of the items in dispute, and reileved I didn't
wait for... what ? The news of the world being interupted by a press
release from Olympus pre announcing the discontinuation of these
models? A lameass e-mail from them?
We plain don't know one way or the other. Assuming it is still in
production is no better than assuming that it isn't. One way might leave
some scrambling around trying to find what they wanted and having to
pay more than they would of had to a few days before. -- So get off it!!

You guys had your rant. I just had mine.

Have a nice day,

Dave
