Getting anxious?

On pins & needles wondering what Sony's gonna do?

Dont' care?

Me. But I'm filling the time shooting pictures, processing pictures, playing with Aperture and LightRoom, watching all the Academy Award nominees before March 5th. Life is good!

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}

They may announce before, at, or after PMA anyway. Tokyo PIE is probably more realistic to see any demo model as it is at the end of March!

Well, I want PMA to get here, but I've lost interest in anything KM/Sony has. I am curious to see what they do. but now I'm much more curious what the likes of Nikon and Pentax did. Jan 18th basically destroyed any interest I had.

Currently it sounds like at best we might get a mock up, or some insight on what they are bringing. I think it would be wise of them to demo a mock up body and announce a preliminary lens lineup to do some damage control/gain momentum. They are in it situation where they have to worry about the entire Minolta install base running away, and need to get people really interested in whats coming.

Minolta 1929-2006, you will be missed so very much. You rode with Glen into the space
age, if only we could all ride along with you into the digital age forever.

I am just waiting till PMA. If KM/Sony do not mention any new stuff i will be gone. Off to Nikon i will be going and saying hello to the D200.

I'll take the 7D and AS over a D200 any day (unless I'm in a studio and shooting from a support with flash). I won't be interested in any DSLR from any manufacturer unless they can provide stabilised image capture with all lenses, especially wide primes. What's the point of lots of pixels if they're blurry, especially when alot of the interesting stuff happens in low light? I'll let Sony have a decent amount of time to show that they can take the Minolta legacy forward and continue to innovate to give photographers cameras that are true tools. Otherwise I might have to consider the alternatives in a year's time, but my 7D is serving my purposes just fine so far.

Cheers,
Daniel.

I'd expect KM had something on line or close and we may hear about that, even if "Sony" badged, if we don't, oh well. Clarification on lenses and accessories would be welcome. Sony has already told us when to expect a camera product from them - which is clearly a lot more notice than KM ever offered.

I think the "problem" in the scheduling isn't so much replacing the 7D (which would be nice) but what to do with a "professional" model, recognizing that most pro's left a long time ago, but also that when the KM and Sony dslrs were expected to be parallel product lines, KM could pick off the high end users. Now Sony has to decide how to deal with a single line that is attractive to new users, attracts some users from other communities and keeps the current user base in the fold.

PMA. more so than all those years when we heard nothing from KM about dslrs before the 7D actually arrived, is going to be a signal to the current user community. Bad or no news may cause a stampede. "Vultures" will snatch up the leavings, body prices might fall, keeping lens prices and maybe flash prices steady and maybe even propped or moved up. "Good" news will settle the troops down.

I think that any stampede will come from people that have exceeded the limits of their cameras (I know I sure haven't) - maybe in professional work - or, most likely, people that just want more and are hooked into the game the industry's created (much like the games with PCs and other technology; the cost of (whatever) new equipment might not be justified by the gains so much as the urge/frenzy to go to the next new thing). Actually, I'm more tired of hearing about PMA than waiting for it! I've got lots and lots to learn, and I'm certainly happy with the results I get from my 7D ... so I can certainly wait a long time. (And KM engineering, ergonomics, colors and AS are why I own this camera - I don't see anything close in other brands.) But I'm still hoping all the upgraders are pleased with whatever does come down the road.

I find myself in a predicament : I am a Minolta lover, but purchased a 300D when it came out more than 2 y ago. Minolta wasnt there back

then. I have used it, it has served me, but ... I hated the camera since the very minute I had it: Shitty plastic feeling, a viewfinder that brings up claustrofobia and ergonomics suited only for a yet-to-be discovered alien life form. It has been written down now and shows some wear and tear
So I am (financially) ready to buy a new again

But what should I do ?

Buy one of the seemingly depleting stock of 7D's ? Which gives me more ergo's , but isnt't technically a step up .

Or wait for that infamous PMA ? If they present an improved 7D or 9D-ish thing, I am happy. But what if not, or they present a Sony camera with less ergonimics than Minolta used to do ?

You think still will be possible to get a new 7D from a store after the PMA you think ?

Tough question, and you're the only one who can answer it! If worse comes to worst and you don't like what Sony's showing and you can't get a new 7D, there'll probably be cameras available on eBay (just look at the posters on this forum who say they'll jump ship) and refurbished units that you can slap a 3-5 year Mack warranty on (I'd go with that option). But there are just too many unknowns - you might just have to go with your gut ... but I have a feeling Sony won't let people down.

Still doesn't really behave that competitively. I cannot believe companies prepare products for market only to sit on them until a trade-show. There'll be some who claim development schedules are all optimised for PMA but given all the different release schedules prior and post, I seriously doubt it applies to all manufacturers.

A well put observation. And I doubt it made any more sense to keep new model release on trade show anymore. Retail shelf life of DSLR / DC is far shorter than like of film camera and every bit of time it can be on the shelf counts.

Besides, why bother to competet for airwaves, when you can have them all if releasing them on a relatively quiet period ( see what Olympus got with the E-330 and E-500 )
