Anyone care to post some FULLSIZE (original) photos shot with the D50/70 that were taken in a highschool or elementary gym? Basketball, cheerleading, volleyball, etc. I have seen some here, but MOST are crops. I can NOT see the detail I'd like to see with crops.

I am almost ready to make the dive. It is quite difficult for me to currently take photos of my daughter cheerleading. I'd like to see how much, or if any, noise removal I may have to do. I rather NOT if at all possible. Plus I'd sure like to lose motion blur. I been researching a while, but the more the better.

Or am I asking for to much with either of these cameras

Dirty thanks for taking the time to post.

The photo those is not of the quality I would of liked "IF" I were to take it myself in a gym. In no way am I referring to your abilities, etc.

It's just the noise or grain of the picture???? I mean you got good sharpness, and hardly any blurr.

Is this a LIMIT of the camera, or the lens you are using, or both?

Or am I expecting to much for the capabilities of the D50/70?

Thanks Sonny. I had ran across his photos in the search.

They look VERY GOOD.

But I can not really make a judgement based on the crop/resize of the photos and if any PP has been done.

The originals may look VERY different.

I will keep searching tho, and I certainly value your time.

Hi Ron,

The noise and grain is because of the ISO of 640. Remember this is without any post processing, straight from the camera.

I don't think you can blame the grain on the lens (85 1.4) this is one of Nikon's best.

While this picture was not intended to show off my skills (clearly it does not) it was intended to give you an idea of what the camera can do under the conditions you asked for. The lighting in a gym is one of the hardest to get right (Brad is a great example of someone who consistently gets it right).

While you may decide that this camera is not what you are looking for, I can tell you that I am very happy with the camera (not so much with my skills, but I am working on it)

Well I am sure your skills are WAY better than mine as I have never used a dSLR or SLR, so I am CLUELESS....lol

I just "assumed" the mid-range ISO pics on a dSLR were cleaner, but then like you say, a GYM is the MOST difficult of situations, as I can well attest to.

I hope the CAMERA IS FOR ME, as it's more around my budget.

Ron,

There is no way to change the laws of physics.

In an average gym, there is only so much light, so you have the following options
1. Slower shutter speed
Causes the dreaded motion blur
2. Bigger aperture
Your gonna need a fast lens ($$)
3. Higher ISO
Causes noise, but you can use neatimage, noise ninja, et. al.
4. Become a benfactor of the school, and pay to intall more lights

Alternatively, you can slow down the shutter a tad, and learn your daughters routine. There is always a split-second where a dancer, cheer leader is motionless. For example, if she jumps up, there is a split-second bewteen when she stops moving up, before she falls back to the earth.

I truely understand all that. I was just wondering which budget dSLR tried to break those rules and get away with it the best possible....lol

This guy does some amazing photos, but then he has one doozy of an expensive camera.

I seen some amazing photos from " c zaphiris "

Taken with the 50mm 1.8. You HAVE to bump the ISO up to get the shutter speed you need. When you look at my originals, you will see noise, but when printed these pics look just fine.

All of my cheerleader pics are in convention centers, not gyms, but you have the same problem there.

Chris,

Interesting that you used F4 when your lens will go down to 1.8. I guess you wanted the DOF? I also take many shots of my sons basketball games. Still trying to decide if I like using the flash or not. Now that I have the Whibal I find I no longer have a problem with the colors under those damn gym lights.
Very nice shots BTW.

I just noticed this post, or I would have replied sooner. I'll just give you a little information about what seems to be doing the trick for me lately, regarding indoor gym shooting.

I take all my shots with a D50, and use the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens. I'd like the Nikon 85mm f/1.8, but have not got around to buying it yet. It looks like I'll be able to get one in mid-April, and that seems to be the best lens for this particular job.

What I do is really very simple.

I shoot in RAW. I Preset the White Balance, and I may do it once or twice, depending on how it looks when I zoom in on the image on the LCD. I shoot at 1/250 and F/2.2 usually, with an ISO of 1600. In the Optimize Image section of the Menu, I set the color to Custom, and use the following:
Sharpening-Normal
Tone Comp-Minus 1
Color Mode II
Saturation-Enhanced
Hue Adjustment-0

That seems to work for me. I try to sit in one of the first three rows, directly to the side of the basket. This is for taking Basketball photos, of course. I only shoot while the team is at my end of the court, as that is really all the lens will allow. While the action is at the other end of the court, I review the last shot I took. If it's cr@p, I delete it, and if it's good, I keep it.

When I get home, I edit the photos through Nikon View, which is a free program. I take litterally seconds on each photo, and don't even adjust the color. I adjust the contrast, lighten or darken, crop and sharpen, and that's pretty much it. I then use Save As, to save them to the "My Pictures" area of my computer, then I run the photos through Noiseware Community Edition, which is also a free program. That's all I do, and I'm happy with the results.

I'm sure someone with more photoshop experience could get more out of my photos, but if they're good enough for me, then that's what counts. I hope you enjoy whatever camera and lens you get, and are pleased with it. Here is a photo of the coach giving a pep talk to one of the guys at the last game I went to. It wasn't really needed, as we won 100-78.

....and it sure...got cold....after the rain fell.......not from the sky......but from my eye......

I forgot to mention that I personally, can't stand the shadows given by using a flash, and all my photos were taken without it. I hear the players are not bothered by it, but it's terribly distracting in the final photos. IMO.

You certainly got some great shots.

I too prefer NON-FLASH if at all possible.

I'll have to bookmark this thread so I can refer to your help. Thanks!
