I just got my D50 and 50mm lens yesterday. Here are a selection of pics I took. I like the cat pic and the lamp pic, but I feel my landscape pics look dull. Please comment! All comments welcome! I am trying to learn

Congratulations!

I also like your cat and the lamp pic, although you can improve the composition by moving the camera to left for the cat pic, and maybe, to right for the lamp pic. It usually don't look very good, when your main object is right in the middle.

For your landscapes, you need to use larger F number. You used F5.6 for both. It will look much better, if you use say F8~F11.

Keep shooting.

WOW! That is amazing. Is it normal that you had to do that though? Or did I do something "wrong" when I took the picture?

Lordsegan,

I believe you should be able to comparable results right out of the camera. I shoot D70 and D200 and don't really know the D50 well enough to advise on that.

I generally shoot RAW and post process my better photos. It's another step in the creative process that you may choose to explore.

Brent

Hi Lordsegan,

It is definitely normal to postprocess images, especially from an SLR, and postprocessing will just about always improve the image.

Here's my take on the image, with all adjustments made in Photoshop Elements 3.0:

WOW! what city is that lord? don't tell me that's a running trail going along the hill? I would just love to run there! as opposed to running on circles around my local park! beautiful city! very nice photographs! follow Brent's recommendations to make your photos even more exciting!

WOW! I'll be jealous if this just "in your backyard" :)
You don't want to see my "backyard".

Here's your first landscape processed a la Dan Margulis' Photoshop Lab Book. (about 30 secs worth) May be a little overdone, but you get the idea.
