Nikon 17-55 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 vr with D2X

i own both on d70 bodies. both on each body. i love the 70-200 the most recently but. its not right for some things you know

It truly depends on the shooting scenario. If I am photographing people at a gathering, 17-55DX stays on the camera more than the 70-200 while if I am shooting at a concert, the 70-200RV stays more often.

Speed is significant and interesting but accuracy is downright fascinating

Thank you for your response. My question relates more to survey than the specific applications. I wonder what lens people has tendency to keep longer on their cameras. For instance I keep my 17-55 most of the time. But may some oters may like to keep the 70-200 the most of the time on their cameras whatever the reason may be.

Far more often at first. Now that I have a 85 f/1.4 I'm probably using the 70-200 almost as often.

Regards,

Bill

I have both and can imagine that if I had to get rid of one it would be the 70-200mm.

Not because I like the 17-55 better it is just easier to move forward but sometime impossible to move backward. Much of my photography is inside with people. The 70-20mm would be very hard to work. Not many could live with the 70-200 alone. If I were trying to budget for 1 lens it would be neither. In that case it might be a 27-70.

I am sorry, but what a question! Is it for a marketing study?

And more important who cares?

He does care. He asked twice.

Sounds like a thread you might have skipped.

But you cared enough not to. :)

Yes and sorry but this is my answer to a ridiculous question. Where do you see a relevant point in such a question?

I actually own the exact same lenses this person is talking about and the only reason I choose to attache the liitle zoom vs, the big one is weight and size related, nothing else.
And nothing to see with "pro talk" as far as I am concerned.

It' like asking which lens most people use to shoot on a beach. Same kind of stupid question.

Is this guy is not able to think about that by himself, there are other problems to be solved here...

Ciao!

17-55 for general portrait and wedding shooting...
70-200 for Surfing shots...

And I've crossed over and carried the 18-200 all through Yosemite over the holidays.

FWIW...

I'm gonna regret this but I'm about ready to move on to different photo forum pastures as DPR has become either a place where the D200 (and it'a associated banding) dominates the D2 board or where the Pro Forum is where the "should I by the Rebel or the D50" seems to be a constant and recurring thread...

R - Check out Gerard's profile and cruise through some of his postings. I've found that when you look through someones postings, they are a good indicator of the type of respondant (both in quality and temperment) they are.

We could have a lengthy philisophical discussion on why people behave the way they do online but surely the anonimity of the internet is a large part of it.

The questions asked (and answered) in this thread were by and large helpful and we all need to focus on those and ignore the occasional thorn...

Just my thoughts...

I get the sense that the inherent nature of the remote, one-way communications here (no tone of voice or body language) can lead to simple misunderstandings [e.g.-- I have had minor squabbles with Phil Youngblood and Uncle Frank when questioning the 85 1.4, which I personally LOVE, as value/utility for SOME OTHER shooters... I have even had the audacity/temerity to question the holy grail 70-200 FOR SOME shooters].

Also, HOWEVER, a venue like this seems to bring out a Dark Side in SOME people --petulance (don't waste my/our time!), getting didactic/pedantic (how dumb can you be?! why would you do that?! ), pröselytizing (my lens is best-- yours is a loser!... you need to get a 70-200!), acting omniscient (the rest of you are wrong and/or not entitled to think differently), getting imperious (you ignorant fool)-- that MIGHT NOT surface in mano a mano, up close and personal situations.

Then again, a FEW simply need to get a better attitude and remember that all are indeed entitled to their respective opinions, and the venue/medium is SURELY MUCH BETTER SERVED by a sense of comity/decorum, a spirit of benevolent helping, and an atmosphere of good will. jmho. BEST!

As you go thru life, don't forget to stop along the way to smell the roses.

The 17-55 is a good indoor lens and I use my 70-200 mostly outside. Even so, the 17-55 is much more portabe.

70-200:
nice to shoot people from a distance (faces or small groups, sports)
you draw attention (con.)

17-55:
for all the rest
if you can get close to the subject it is very universal

Picture quality is about the same on my d2x, maybe a little bit on the side of the 70-200.

If you do not own a 70-200 go to shop, mount it on your camera and decide wether you want to walk around with it.
