These are called Amazing Circles, and are produced using this simple technique:

They are quite addictive, finding photos from your collection that work well, and then manipulating further if you choose to. A great group to share these circle creations, or just view a large variety is here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/amazingcircles/ (if you're a member of Yahoo email you can log into Flickr).

I've produced a Photoshop action (I know it works with CS/CS2) to make it even easier to experiment:

remember you dont need to start with actual photos:

How did you make #3?

It began life as this image from Katia BR as part of the Weekend Challenge:

I then copied it 3 more times and flipped/rotated/arranged the parts to make a pleasing larger pattern. I flatterned the image and applied the Amazing Circles routine.

Next, the circle was copied twice and each had its hues adjusted so that one was more red, one more green and the last more blue.

I arranged them with the green one larger and in front of the other two (with a bit of masking where necessary), then made the graduated shadows by copying and flipping and applying gradient masks and reducing the opacity.

Finally I wanted the circles to appear a bit more spheroid so subtlely added shading to each.

Cool circle effects-Thanks for the link and action.
I have never tried this filter before-I am amazed at what it can do!

Lots of playing ahead!

You're welcome Mike. Glad you're having fun. I like the "circle of friends" image. :)

Keep playing and having fun.
