Most Unusual Animal You've Photographed

Juli,

Not sure if they're actually an endangered species, but ours were
actually stolen from the zoo about two years ago, supposedly for
their value. They were recovered, none the worse for wear, but the
local newspapers made quite a big deal about how rare and valuable
they were.

I dunno, maybe it was just to get publicity for our underfunded zoo
... but these little guys are certainly cute.

An underfunded zoo in Santa Barbara! Now that is unusual species.... :)

I think this is an unusual animal:

No, it's not an obese rabbit but a Vizcacha. They live at high altitudes in the Andes and are related to the Chinchilla. I found this one (a whole group actually) in the Atacama desert in northern Chile. This picture shows its tail: definitly not a rabbit:

This is definitely the best one yet! We'll probably see it in the next Harry Potter movie. 8-)

I found this little critter just beside the footpath in a nature reserve at 2 'o clock at night. It posed for a few pictures before retreating deeper into the lose scree it lives under..

These little guys are the oddest animal I've photographed at the Toronto Zoo. This is a shot of a bunch of them sleeping.

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.

How about some photos of really unusual animals, taken anywhere.
Use your own judgement as to what's unusual.

These are meercats from the Santa Barbara Zoo. They're supposed to
be quite rare. I'm told there are only 14 in captivity in the U.S.
The Bronx Zoo had a number of them until a couple of years ago (about 6 of them, IIRC; I don't know where they are now), so I doubt that there are only 14 in the US.
