I'll let you all know how my test go. I just ordered a Sigma 20mm 1.8 and a 24-70EX 2.8 DG from Delta International today. Will be getting them tomorrow. I have an engineering friend that has set up some complex tests for lenses that I will subject these to on Thursday. I'll let you know how it comes out. I will be directly comparing the 24-702.8 against the venerable Canon 28-702.8L lens. The other day we tested my 17-35EX Sigma against the 17-35L lens at quite frankly, the Sigma had it all over the Canon at 2.8. At F4 the field was level and they were virtually indistinguishable from each other. Not bad considering one cost $389 and the other over $1300. I am hoping (against hope) that the 24-70 can be a repeat performance. It isn't that I have a passion for Sigma....believe me. It is just that right now I would prefer to get the best bang for the buck, and it is seeming that Sigma is on a roll. I'll let you all know Thursday night how it went.

let me know the results...I need something fast and in the wide range...I just can't bring myself to buy the Canon 28-70L or the 17-35L though. I am buying the Canon 70-200L 2.8 and the 100-400L though. I always want the most bang for my buck though...if sigma has a BETTER lens I don't mind using them.

I'll be glad to Wolfgang...as for the 17-35 the autofocus speeds were exactly the same with NO difference at all. The 50mm 1.4 does focus a tad quicker than the 28-70 2.8L but not a heck of a lot. I'll let you know with the others Friday.

Could you please compare the autofocus speed too?
Thanks

I've got the Sigma 18-35F/3.5-4.5 and also their 28-300F/3.5-6.3

I got them for my EOS Film cam and can't wait to see the results on my D30 (should have by Friday).

Those 2 big Canon lenses are also on my "to buy" list without exception. It is the 28-70 and fixed 20 or so mm range that I was wrangling over. Soon I will find out. It is not ME that is doing the test so I doubt I will have the files. And if I did have them they would be large enought that if compressed would NOT tell the whole story. I guess you guys will just have to trust me on this one. As far as the 17-35 is concerned, I still feel that the Sigma rules. I have had a couple of friends buy them on my suggestion and are way happy campers now.

One of the reasons I think for the big cost difference is the Canon has a 2.8 aperture throughout the zoom doesn't it? The sigma says 2.8-4

NOPE.....the 24-70 EX DG is a 2.8 at ALL focal lengths or I wouldn't have even considered it. It also uses 2...not just the one spherical element that the Canon uses as well as offering dual ULD (ultra low dispersion) elements as well. I just couldn't resist. I am a techie kinda guy and wanted to see if it just might be possible to outdo the Canon one more time. LOL

Has anyone ever communicated with the folks at Photodo. I've emailed them but never rcvd a response. It would be interesting to know what lenses they are currently testing and when they expect the testing to be published on their website. It would be nice if they allowed us to express to them which lenses we would like to see tested and list the votes on their site.

Jim

Can't wiat to see your results as cost is very important but of course the final image quality is more so.
