Nifty new battery charger/conditioner/tester

Hi, Jerry,
I agree with Jeff. I think the original post read more like an
advertisement than a review of the product.
It wasn't a "review" - just a description.
This charger has been
available for a while and is sold from many sources, I bought mine
from Amazon. It struck me as strange that only one source was
metioned . .
Why? That was where I ran into it. The note was, after all, not a product review.

Best regards,

Doug

. . . but shortly after I sent that one-liner, I was thinking the same thing!

Like the "intelligent fill" tool in my image editor!

I'd say so! I like the "test" mode - how cool is that to see if your 2500mAh is still putting out 2500mAh's? Or if it ever really did put out that much.

The conditioning feature isn't new (back in the days when NiCads were king, I saw a few conditioners - though they were not cheap).

What a great price on this thing. I've never seen a charger that can do so much.

Now lets get down to business - What's your cut, Doug?

I think Doug owes me. :)

For the price, I would question the accuracy of the measurement readouts.

Sure it's cool, but, is really doing you any good?

jeff did ask, politely and perfectly comprehensibly, and you just acted like a pompous ass.

Brother Peterman's only inquiry was as to my status. He said nothing about status in what regard.

I responded with a discussion of that.

You are quite correct - it is always best to accurately read the correspondence that is being discussed before commenting on it.

He also said in another place that if I were an Empolyee of Thomas Distributing then blah blah blah. That was not a question, and did not call for an answer.

The intimation of it was insulting, and I let him know my feelings about that. We pompous asses work that way.

I would have hoped that after my 18,600 some posts here, he, a regular visitor and contributor himself, would have had some insight into what kind of person he was dealing with.

Best regards,

Doug

I guess people here can't tell when someone is being helpful.

Jim,

First, let's get non-germane issues out of the way - I confess that I'm a forum ****, an idiot, a troll, a newb without common sense, or whatever form of lowlife others may call me for my earlier posting in this thread. Likewise, I'll take your advice to heart and try to get a life.

However, that doesn't change the fact that the original post looks like an advertisement to me. It speaks glowingly of a product, decribes it in detail, mentions its price, and links to where it might be bought from (a commercial site). All of this without a disclaimer that the poster is not connected with the seller.

From the forum rules:

"Commercial advertising - Commercial website linking or advertising is not allowed, if you wish to advertise on the site contact us. This rule includes webmasters of other digital photography websites promoting themselves on the forum. You will be banned and have all of your messages removed."

The intent and stature of the poster is not an issue at this point (however good these are). There was a linking to a commercial website.

All of these fuss should not have developed if the poster inserted a disclaimer in the original post or clarified that in subsequent posts. Good intent and stature is not enough if the means violates the rules.

Instead, the poster and some forum members raised issues that are not germane to the point. Exchange of insults and name calling won't resolve the basic question that goes - "Is the original post an ad or not?"

It looks like one to me and to a few people. But if the poster had issued clarificatory statements, I would believe him because of his good track record and stature in this forums.

Sorry guys, I have to swim against the current this time.

Your half-idiot co-forum member,

Romy
Doug, I can't believe these idiots who are questioning you about
your review of the battery charger. These guys are totally over
the top...what a bunch of idiots. You've been around for quite a
while, offer a review on something Phil will not review and these
clowns put on their Brown Shirts and start policing. Either they
are Newbs or just have no common sense.

Thanks for the review and.... to the mob of forum police.. get a
life guys... and be thankful someone took the time to review an
item you may desire to own.

It appears that others are more worked up about our "discussion" than either of us. I guess that's good. (VBG)

In fact, it's insulting that you think I have. Please do not take this as a "flame."

But it was impolite to make fun of my name like that. Next, you'll start making fun of my appearance.

Ahh yes, no we are getting somewhere!

About these posts on "various technical topics and reports" here on dpreview... I have read a number of them and they have been quite helpful to me. Exactly how much do you charge to access these reports and other tutorials?

Will the scandals never cease?
I regularly post here notes on various technical topics and
reports, typically quite detailed, on various pieces of equiopment
of interest to our activities. I also have a Web site in which
there are numerous tutorial articles on such matters.

Hi, Gang,

Well, evidently my report on a charger/tester for AA cells was not
well received.

Please consider it withdrawn.

Here is the replacing report:

********

I understand that there is now available a small unit that will
allow AA-size Ni-MH cells to be charged, refreshed, and tested for
capacity.

********

In any event, you should not be apprehensive about the prospects of
any more equipment reports from this office.

In any case, I have to run. UPS just delivered a really nice
accessory for one of my pieces of phtographic equipment, and I am
anxious to test it. Those of you who receive the family Christmas
bulletin may be able to read of my results there.

I hope you all continue to have the kind of forum you deserve.

Doug
I thought it was a great report Doug!

Personally, I buy NiMH cells in bulk of a dozen or more from the guys at local hamfests, anything over 2000mah perform very well. For charing I have a couple of Panasonic's BQ-390 chargers that plug right into a wall socket and fold up quite nicely for stuffing in a camera bag or coat pocket if needed. When the batteries finally wear out I toss 'em and buy more.

NiMH cells don't suffer from memory problems like the older NiCad's did, so IMHO the discharge/condition functions of such chargers like the one you've reviewed aren't all that important. I think I paid less than 10 bucks apeice for the chargers and they've worked just fine for the past couple years.

Just one man's opinion.........your mileage may vary.

Of course, Panasonic could come up with an upgraded version of this charger next month and then I'd have to replace them all. :)
