I was going to buy the Panasonic remote for my FZ30, but the site says check for local dealer. Is it necessary to buy the Panasonic item, or are remotes a common/standard thing and will any brand work?

The wired remote for the FZ10/20/30 is not a generic item. In addition to using an uncommon 2.5mm 4-conductor plug, the assembly also contains resistors that have to be switched in a specific manner - it's not just a simple on/off kind of thing. Here's a diagram of the circuit:
The Phayee remote from eBay works fine, although some people have said it doesn't hold up well. The button assembly is also a lot smaller than Panasonic's, which may be an asset or a drawback depending on your preferences. The Phayee and the Panasonic are the only wired remotes that I'm aware of (aside from some folks' DIY versions.)
I purchased the Panasonic RS1 which I ordered in through my local London Drugs in B.C. It took about a week to recieve it. It works as intended and through my eyes, quality seems fine; button has positive stops for half and full depression. I read some quality concerns with the Phayee remote through this forum, so I opted for the "Factory provided" model. No Regrets.

I like the factory (Pani) remote switch because it is bigger than the phayee and it has a clip. When the camera is set on a tripod the neck strap hangs from the camera. I CLIP the remote switch to the strap so it is in a handy location. It may seem like a small thing but I find the clip very useful.

I'm not worried about being well past my 'sell-by date'. What concerns me is my 'expire date'.
