Best Buy Recall of Sony F707's

Does that mean they are giving refunds or just a promise of new cameras.

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum. I purchased the 707 last Monday (10/19) from Best Buy as a Christmas gift for my fiancee. (So the box is still unopened.) Since then, I have been doing a lot of research trying to get my hands on any information I can find regarding this camera. Needless to say, my heart sank when I started reading all these messages about a recall! Although I plan to call my Best Buy store to get additional information, I am unclear as to one thing. Is this a Sony recall, or just a Best Buy recall? Not that it really matters I suppose, but I am just curious.

Also, how would we even know if the next shipment included the "fix" for this camera? My impression is that there is a lot of confusion over this issue and the right hand doesn't really know what the left hand is doing! I would hate to exchange my camera only to find out that the second one came from a bad batch too. Since this is a gift, I am concerned about this entire issue.

Contacted BB few minutes ago. Salesperson told me the same info provided earlier in this forum: Because F707 didn't meet Sony's high standard(whatever it means), BB has stopped selling F707 until new shipment come in. No ETA, however. He told me he got the words couple of days earlier.

I called Sears where I purchased from and they didn't know about it. The guy told me even if Sears got some words from Sony, most likely the info won't pass down to his level. I asked him if there's anymore F707 in stock, he said 2 left. Oh well, I guess BB is more informed than Sears.

I'm glad that Sony listened to our complaints and gonna do something about it. Hopefully people like Perry and Bryan will purchased another F707 when flash problem is solved. I'm also hoping by fix this BFS problem, sony won't introduce other bugs.

Being Dan seems to be a brand new poster to this thread, I tend
towards caution until we know him better. Could this be a joke or
is it true, call your dealers to find out for sure and call Sony.

Of course I hope it is true. :-)

We've also got to be realistic about this. How many computers have you owned? How many different programs over the years have you worked with?

A digital camera is a computer with a lens on it. There will always be bugs. The best we can do is report them where we find them, hoping for a fair resolution.

I just called Sears, where I bought my camera. I had the same experience. The manager is out today, but the rep that I spoke to seemed appreciative of the fact that I called in because he is now "more educated" about the issue. He also told me that there is no problem in me coming in and either exchanging the camera, getting a refund, or waiting for the next batch to come in.

I purchased a DSC-F707 from Sears on Friday (getting them to match my Dell pricing, since Dell was backordered for quite a while).

A few interesting things about buying from Sears:

1) They weren't showing products on the shelf yet. The sales person was going to special order the camera for me and went back to check for stock just in case. Needless to say they had at least one.

2) My camera doesn't seem to have BFS. I took a lot of flash pictures over the weekend, including 20 of blank white walls, and couldn't repro BFS at all. I'm wondering if I have a "fixed" camera. It will be interesting to learn more about the recall and find out which serial numbers need the fix.

I also bought the Sears PPP, but I might return that (it says I have 30 days to do so). The salesperson told me it would be good for 2 years, but when I looked at the small print on the PPP it says 1 year, 3 months.

Alex,

What is your serial number???

Here's my story: didn't think I had a BFS problem until this weekend. Went to BB to check out recall story. Salesman told me that he shipped all his stock to warehouse (they still had one on display) and said I should hear directly from Sony. He also said Sony had something about this posted on their web site.

Couldn't find anything about this on the Sony websites (including http://www.sel.cony.com ).

Called Sony at the phone number on the box (1-888-449-sony). At first, customer rep. claimed she had no information about a recall. I told her about the BB memo and she went to check. Got the same message others here received: they are aware of the WB problem and I will be "contacted as necessary" by Sony.

end of story.

Dan, I have been following the postings about the Sony F707 camera and after reading the review was ready to purchase. However, when I went to BB at lunch, the sales person said they are no longer available and have been recalled. When pressed, she said it was due to "a problem with battery getting very hot"!!
I was surprised, since the review was excellent in this area. I am looking for information validate her statement...with the combined problems I am now very leary of purchasing this camera and am considering my next best option.

Her statement is BS. She doesn't have a clue on what she was talking about. According to my local BB in Sothern California. New shipment comes in on 11/24.

I went to look at one this past weekend (at best buy) and the two working at the camera section stated the camera did not meet sony's standard, no idea when the next supply would be in and they pointed me toward the s85.

They kept mentioning that the 707 is not a true 5 meg. camera and the s85 would produce a better pic...? They had no idea why the cameras were sent back... I mentioned the bfs and they had no idea what I was talking about...

I suspect that most of these sales people know little if anything about the details of the recall ( They also don't seem to know much about the products they are selling either) Thanks to this web site and associated forum, I have learned a great deal about digital cameras and am better equipped to make an informed descision. Still, we have to deal with another problem/recall with this camera and my entrance into digital is on hold... In light of the I wonder if current owners are still happy with their purchase or would trade them in if given the option ? I was so sure that I was getting the best camera for under $1000, now I have serious doubts..
