please...

im selling my gear, and looking for a lower cost alternative such as the km5d. the kit lens covers nice range, and built in AS for free.

But i dont know the negative points, please tell me some.

Also, any of you felt the camera is too slow?

thanks

Few really negative points, but i can tell you lot of positive things.
If i should pick one negative, its the flash exposure.

BUT..there are a number of negative things which applies to ALL dslr´s:
Price
bulkyness/size
right lens for right situation not always there
Audible noise, no spy shots anymore
low makro performance

low dof (only to be corrected by very expensive lenses/high iso). Ofcourse the low dof can also be positive, fx for some portraits
No live preview
etc.....

i think the sigma/km/tam's 18-200mm + 5D's AS is always right for all situation (for me)

I have bought 350D, after 2 weeks, and Im selling them due to budget blowout, from 1500 to 2500, and still havent completed everything I need.

KM can cover most by only spending around $1500 or 1800 at most.

Here's the cons of a dSLR that I found after a few days of usage:
-Limited shutter life (50000 shots for canon 350d, make ma cant toy with it)
-EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE GEAR & LENSES, NO ALL IN ONE LENS for the canon

-DUST sucks! cleaning delicate sensor with cheap equipment isnt reliable, while good equipment is hard to get here.
-Small screen, very hard to check focus
-Very often backfocus/ wrong focusing, with all 3 of my lens

well, thats enough, its good, but its not worth the 2500

I knew these stuff from the canon because I used the 350D. But I need to know the ?KM before switching, so I didnt make 2nd mistake.

I have never read any complaints about shutter life being too short with any of the current dSLRs. In your first post, you mentioned slowness; to what were you referring? I have a 5D and I don't notice slowness in any aspect except that some lenses focus slower than others, which is true with any system.

From reading your posts, it seems that after going to the trouble to replace your 350D, you may shortly end up trading out your new choice as well, for some small reason.

no, the dust & shutter life is no problem. Its just a fact that I consider as a con compared to all in ones like R1. But dont tell me to go for P&S, they are too slow :) . There are small kids in my house that loves to burst like crazy with my cameras, so with this fact I cant lend my slr to them.

The main reason I gave up 350D is price. It really took a lot to have image stabilized lens that covers some range. With KM, sigma 18-200 appears to be an decent all in one solution, wide to tele, quite sharp, and image stabilized by the body. With canon, ISing both 17-85 and 70-300 range costs 3X than the sigma, and it still requires me to carry 2 lens, after spending that much, the specs is still comparable to KM using 18-200, despite of the extra 100mm (to300mm) which I'll never use. The body itself is more expensive than the KM, so do with the flash and other accessories.

Another reason is that Sony's next slrs support KM lenses, its very probable Ill get them later, so I better invest in KM stuff other than canon.

About the slowness, well, I read the reviews that the speed like continuous, buffer clearance, startup, focusing, etc is slower than comptition. I just dont know if its noticeable in real life.

Another question, does the sigma lenses can us the AS as well? Or it has to be KM's?

Flash canb e used in burst mode right?

I suggest you think a bit harder about this! The KM5D is an excellent camera with minor annoyances, but so is the Canon. If cost is your main concern, and that is how it seems from your post, then selling off the body, lenses and flash is not likely to raise enough to buy a similar KM5D based system is it?

That said, what don't I like about my 5D? Very little actually! When I'm carrying it I would like it to be smaller and lighter (still), when I'm using it I would like the body to be a little larger! The right hand grip is excellent, but I do find the corner of the body near the AF/MF switch tends to dig into the base of my thumb a bit when supporting a compact lens.

The viewfinder is good, but would be better if it projected slightly behind the back of the body and had slightly more eye relief (I'm a right eyed spectacles wearer; left eyed users seem to have had particular difficulties).

The LCD is large and clear, but some users complain about its modest resolution. Maximum magnification in review is only 4.7x and not enough to really judge focus.

I find AF with the 18-70 kit lens or the 24-105 f/3.5-4.5 to be fast and reliable and shutter lag perfectly acceptable, but Canon (with some lenses anyway) are probably faster.

Continuous shooting at 2.7 frames/s is the going rate in this class of camera. Continous AF does strike me as a bit slow sometimes, but I seldom use it.

it will raise enough money, because I own them for only 2 weeks. Here, Im not selling them, but I return them with a certain amount of penalty.

The maximum 4.7x magnification is a pain though....

Continuous AF = AF Servo right???

Well I've had my 5D for 5 months and feel I've given it a good work-out.
Here are my important features:

AS - plenty of users will testify to this feature. I take it for granted that I will get usable shots in situations where NO other camera will succeed without adding very expensive IS or VR lens. I actually prefer the KM system where the stabilization goes on in the background rather than in the view finder. I've used the canon system and impressive tho' it is, I found myself waiting for the image to 'clear' before I took the shot and consequently lost some shots - in other words I was the limiting factor rather than the camera. It seems to be effective down to half a second which is like money in the bank.
Colour - just about the best rendition available.
Lens range - enough for everyone but the most demanding.

Ergonomics - well balanced size/weight ratio and almost all the controls you need to hand without using menus. My only real gripe with the 5D is the position of the AEL button - I find I have to be careful not to set it to the on position accidently, but this is down to the way I hold the camera and the size of my hands/fingers.

Spec - No complaints except that I would like a wider bracketing range, say + - 1.5 stops.
Performance - no complaints and certainly NOT slow. Battery life is excellent.
Overall - well worth the money, in fact it's a steal.
cheers

Hello, I'm a K/M5D user. There are no cons in my book for this camera at least not for me. AS will work for that 18-200 Sigma lens your talking of as well as any Minlota AF lense. I just got a Sigma 28-200 lens but had not had the chance to try it out yet. I know from what others say here it's not going to be tack sharp and will be soft. But for the price of under $100 bucks I don't think you can bet it. It's build is solid and looks good. Some will call it a dog of a lens, I'll find out soon. I'm just using it for a carry along lense whan all I want is one lens for snaps. I think you will love the 5 D I love it's small size and it;s hefty build. It does have some weight to it, For me thats a good thing! No real lag time and startup is about 1sec. from off, or the sleep mode.

A shallow dof can be eliminated by choosing a smaller aperture seting (available on all SLR lenses at any cost, even the cheepie kit lens).
Are you shooting in a program mode???

i knew this.

er.. which statement of mine made you ask this? about focusing errors or unsharp images?

True, focus errors often caused by low dof, i once portraited a person, and the focus is in her ears, even its a frontal portrait, DOF is so shallow. most of the time I cannot use smaller aperture because my shutter speed cannot go lower than 1/20. I mainly shoot in low light

You mean it will get me thrown out of of events for amateur shooters only! Gonna take it to the rodeo today where only amateur shooters are allowed and I wll not be happy if the loud mirror slap gets me tossed out!

Press pass is certainly in order here.

wow, to be heard in a rodeo is certainly loud

LOL!! It's like most SLR Or DSLR's.. Only sounds loud if your coming from a point and shoot camera. You want to hear a loud shutter try a old Exakta 500! Now that thing is loud. Some people duck when you fire that shutter off ! I got one when I was a kid and still have it.--

I have heard less noisy mirrors I think! Anyway, I will be dragging my ps around as it will not offend people at high class shows and the like. Some places you need to be quiet and those are the perfect places for a good point and shoot.

I also find that shooting candids in tight spaces is another problem with the mirror slap. I can take the 7hi and the 28-200 and a 1.4 tc and fire-off without regard for being caught.

Anyway, I think the loud slap could have been dampened somehow. I have been thrown out of places with the lens length and the nice quiet sound of the 7hi so I imagine I will be tossed out of more places than ever this year! Yahooo....not. To solve this I will be obtaing press passes to events later in the year but it's still fun to shoot with the family at times.

Cheers

Apparently not, or so David Kilpatrick inferred. I think the designers needed to dissipate energy from the mirror as noise rather than couple it into the AS sensor system as vibration. One of the trade-offs for the in-body AS at a reasonable price.

OK. You did say "selling" in your first post. If it is a return for refund case then swap to a 5D! You are right; a fully image-stabilised system is MUCH cheaper.
