F10 Photos quality issue

May be here I am missing the issue. I am thinking that photos
should look perfect when scaled at 100%, the true size. I am
confused in fact.
When a photo is printed from film ... the negative is enlarged to
fit the paper, and the amount of real resolution is about 200ppi or
so. In the digital world, printers can pack a lot omore pixels in
an inch, so we tend to take the 2800 pixels on the long dimension
and print them onto the 6 inches of paper. That gives over 400ppi
... so when you look on screen at an image at 100%, you are
spreading all these pixels out and examining them far too close.
This is useful for comparison between digicams, but not for you to
see how the image will look when printed or when downsized with
interpolation for display.

Example: my recent sports equipment series. Close goggles shot.
A crop at 100% with lots of visible noise because it was shot at
1600ISO. If noise scares you, shoot in auto, because it will not
jump to 1600ISO.

Full shot reduced to 640 only. Still noisy, but a lot better.
Certainly fine for a snapshot ... especially if 1600ISO was the
only way to capture the shot.

Same shot post processed appropriately for display ... this shot
can get peoples' attention.

Many thanks for your explaination. It looks to me more evident now. Any way the last photos looks great. But what sort of magic touch can be done to get that quality!!! Great job.

BTW, my
lens came with a big finger print on it, make sure your lens is
clean.
????

Was this found when you opened the box from new? Was the factory seal intact?

I may be lucky that I collect my cameras in person from my local retailer, but I always check the Fuji foil seal is intact on the camera's wrapping before leaving. A fingerprint on the lens must be about the worst sign of bad 'history' as far as cameras are concerned...

Thanks for your comment and in fact it is too late since my camera has been purchased months ago. However, I don't think the issue has to do with lens cleaning. The images taken with flash appears to be clean and acceptable. My question is why the pictures are completely noisy from 100iso and above, when dispalyed in full size on the screen, while the Canon Ixus 400's photos quality is the same in both cases.

ISO1600 with flash (resized only). Quite acceptable to me:

This is perfect for me too. I wish I can get that at iso1600. Here is some of mine:

This is an exemple of Conon Ixus400 "Screen size and Full size" no difernecesbetween the 2:

While with the F10 the difference here is quite noticable. Regardless of of picture sharpness. The issue is grains:

Kim, thanks very much for showing how post processing can work well. I've never done this before but based on your example, I think I may star doing this.

What program did you use to process the picture, and what commands did you use? Is this program easy to use for the novice.

I think i got a prob with my link. Here it is:

Well, I use PhotoShop CS2. It has a long learning curve. You can get a lot done with Elements 4.0, which is a cut down version that has more automatic fixes built in.

I follow some or all of this process for every shot:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1012&message=16701486

Shot 1 - use macro mode.
Shot 2 pick your point of focus - too much to let the camera pick.

Shot 3 - cloudy days will always yield noisey/grainy shots because of lack of natural light.

If you want help with your images, you'll need to remove all that [ IMG] cr@p off the ends of your URLs and use preview to make sure they come up.

Put a ; on the end to stop inline loading if they are large.

I hope y'll learn a lot on your camera and will be able to show us the result of your successful works soon.

Cheers
Je ne peux pas t'aider car j'ai le f10 depuis a peine quatre jours
mais en tous cas ça m'a fait plaisir de revoir la Défense

Except for FujiMed's comment, I am finding this thread very helpful. As a new F10 owner, every constructive suggestion (whether positive or negative, novice or professional) keeps me coming back for more.
