Hi,

I'm planning on buying either one of these cameras. Which one do you suggest? I think the Panasonic is slightly more expensive. Is it worth it?

I'm planning on taking photos of our children (good close-ups for instance) and probably also artistic photos.

Thanks for any feedback.

The FZ20 is worth the exact same as the H1 ($500 US). Between those 2, i would say pick the Sony H1, because it has better features and the image quality is by far better than the FZ20 photos.

However, I highly recommend you getting the FZ30 instead. It's only $90 more than the FZ20/H1, and it comes with WAY better features, like manual zoom ring, manual focus ring, 8MP sensor (vs 5MP on the FZ20/H1), you can zoom when filming videos, etc.

Below is a link to a "Panasonic FZ30 vs Sony H1" thread that brings up many good points of how the FZ30 is much better than the H1.

Good luck!

Uuuh, no it isn't ? Not according to DPReview anyway.

The FZ20 has a poorer video mode but as a still camera it is excellent. It has the best lens of the 2. If video mode is important you can also consider the Canon S2 which is not at all bad. If you dont have as much money the (Panasonic) FZ5 is worth looking at.

Compare test pictures before you decide. Choices, choices...

I think so... Thats of course my own personal opinion... but from all the sample photos i've seen here on DPreview, the Sony H1 does produce better images, and it also produces a lot less noise than the FZ20 and the FZ30... still, i say go for the FZ30.

In my country (Finland) the FZ30 costs $737 minimum. The H1 is currently at $482. That's much more than $90 difference. I think the FZ30 is so new so it still is very expensive.

Is it madness to pay $737 for the FZ30?

Whatever you do don't go Sony, if it goes wrong you'll never get it fixed.

I have a Panasoni FZ5 and it's a great little camera, go for the FZ30 the reviews reckon it's everything the FZ20 should have been.

You mentioned "taking pictures of your children". I don't know anything about the Z20 but the H1 has a very strong flash, sometimes TOO strong.

It'll be hard to take a great pic, indoors, with either camera. You'll have to use the flash. Unless there's lots of indoor lighting or natural light coming in from the windows.

I've heard great things about the z20 but I chose the H1 and i'm glad I did. It's a superb camera. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice really. Good luck to you!

"Back away from the kid and no one gets hurt" When possable I stay about 10ft. away and zoom. That seams to work pretty well.

There are many threads with the same topic on the panasonic forum and on the sony forum. It is funny to see that the opinions are so different!

To me panasonic has better lens and Sony has better performances in low light and silghtly better pics out of the camera (need less post processing).

If you don't need to print posters you won't never need the 8 mp of FZ30 and is not such a big improvement respect FZ20 (as explained in the review: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicfz30/page17.asp )

I choose H1 becuase it uses AA batteries (maybe it's stupid but they're cheap and easy to find)
