I want to buy UV and Polarizer filters for my 17-85 and 10-22mm. What filters would you recommend for these lenses? Since the 10-22 is very wide, I suppose I have to buy special thin filters so that they don't show up in the edges?

Fender.

I wouldn't recommend UV filters for either one. I would recommend lens hoods instead. Yes, Canon lens hoods are overpriced. But they'll make your pictures better and will provide some protection for the front of your lens. And they're still cheaper than decent UV filters.

I also would not recommend a polarizing filter for the 10-22. Polarizing filters on wide-angle lenses don't work very well for the usual application of "darkening the sky" because the amount of polarizing effect on sky depends on the angle relative to the sun. With a very wide-angle lens like that, the polarizing effect varies a LOT across the picture, giving a very odd effect.

For the 17-85, spend the extra bucks to get a good polarizing filter. I got a Heliopan for mine, and have been quite happy with it.
