D200 with NO banding, can you believe it

Yes I can believe no banding. I see none in mine and have tried the
torture tests to see it in extreme contrast and over-exposure. I
have used in Canadian winter and now for a week in Mexico and
really love the results. Your last pic is an award winner. You
should submit it to a contest or Photo of the day!

You're right. If you have to shoot thousands of shots to see an instance of banding, how bad a problem is it.

Anybody who saw Jono's thread from yesterday knows that those who don't have banding vastly outnumber those that have it.

I for one and sick and tired of a few posters on this forum who continue to belabor the issue and insist that the problem is HUGE, and that all of us that don't have a banding problem really do but are too stupid to know it, and that all D200s should for some reason be recalled. I believe their D200s have banding, but why do they demand that everyone has banding. Misery loves company, I guess.

What? No pictures of lightbulbs?

HOW DARE YOU contribute photos to this forum that don't have lightbulbs in them! Instead, you've been indulging yourself with beautiful pictures of animals, bridges, and ocean sunsets.

What were you thinking man?

Same question to Uncle Frank - the very beautiful and colourful
bird (parrot I guess) picture - where did you focus?
I've taken over a thousand shots since then, so I can't be certain, but my standard approach is to focus on a subject's eyes, which are the essential elements in any portrait. I was using the 85/1.4 prime lens from close distance at a wide aperture setting, which made DOF was very thin, so focus placement was critical.

The shooting data was 1/1000s f/3.2 at 85.0mm iso320

I declared mine band-free two weeks after I bought it, after putting it through some informal testing and shooting 500+ times. But then one afternoon last week, while shooting a backlit object in front of a bright sunny window, BOOM, there it was. I'm not saying they all have it by any means, but it is possible that more people have it than they think, and may just not have encountered the circumstances to display it. Fortunately, it appears that Nikon can fix it, and mine's in the shop for repair. With any luck, it will be back better than new.

Hope yours and others continue to be band-free, and that NIkon ensures that the new ones to be shipped soon are band-free. It's really a great camera.

By the way, nice shots.

Alan

No problem, Karl. Don't be too hard on RJ. He's just trying to defend his d200, and misplaced his sense of humor in the process.

hey frank,

sorry then, didn't mean to call you a moron really.

i didn't know you from before (i don't hang out here too much or pay attention to names), but now I know you were joking.

please understand though, my reaction is simply based on the attention to this issue on the forum, and it would seem as though there are a lot of people here who actually say seriously what you were saying as a joke. so i guess im just getting tired of those people. anyway sorry again for being offensive.

Well, I bought my D200 yesterday and initially thought there was no banding. However, after shooting a couple of shots today that include falt areas (grey sky) I have found some banding !

I can only see it after I have sharpened the image in PS, and view at 200%, but it is there.

Have printed a couple of the images off but cannot make my mind up if its the banding that I am seeing or a result of from my printer...

I must admit that I was really impressed with the camera yesterday but finding the nabding has taken some of the shine off it !!

Just stop blowing your pictures up to 200% and looking for trouble, Davey.

Sheesh, if you looked at your wife that closely, you'd be sending her back for warranty work, too.

Any newly introduced camera is great fun for enthusiasts, and a target for measurebators. Figure out which you want to be, and act accordingly. I'm into taking pics that make me smile, not pixel peeping.

Hi Frank,

Don't blast me I aint a pixel peeper... Thats why I have tried a print ! If they print ok then thats fine with me.

I do expect when paying out my money to receive a 100% quality assured camera though.

I just want to take photos and not have to worry about all the issues that seem to be going on in the digital world..

That's where you took a wrong turn, Davey. There's no way Nikon can guarantee a new camera is problem free. In fact, no manufacturer has ever introduced a problem free dslr. All Nikon can do is guarantee they'll address the problems as they're discovered, and they appear to be doing that with regard to banding. When you buy a new model, you're signing up to be a beta tester.

Whats more important to you? Taking photographs that have great image quality, or taking photographs that are quality images?

That last shot is absolutely awsome. Is that how it came out of the camera? I'm curious what kind of conditions that was shot in, any sort of filters you might have used, and any sort of post processing you did. In short, tell us how you did it :)
