No, this isn't a post bashing the R1.

But think about these two questions first before buying the R1.

1.) What is the likelihood of Sony making a DSLR that ist better than its R1?

My guess, highly likely.

2.) When do you think Sony will release it's information about the DSLR?

I bet Sony will announce it by PMA 2006 (i.e. Feb/06).

So is the advice 'Stop buying the R1 now and wait a bit' good advice?

This is not a good advice. I bought the R1 because its an excellent camera. I didn't want a DSLR. Otherwise I had bought a Canon or a Nikon.
The R1 is super, and it doesn't matter what Sony does in the future.

Precisely. If I'd wanted a DSLR I'd have bought a D70s and carried on using my exisitng Nikon lenses but I've found that the 35mm lens I use for nearly everything is 24-135mm so the R1 is a very close match to that. I'd like a little more at the long end of the R1's range but a quick push of the digital zoom button sorts that out when required and I still have the same effective resolution as the D70s

Progress is progress and fo my mind the aerial and outback photography- the camera is exactly what I wanted - a NON DSLR camera!

I have a Pentax and two Nikon outfits in the cupboard and can not imagine going back to a open body - lens swapping scenario again!

I got EXACTLY what I wanted!!!

R1 and 828 in the air down under (707 and 505 in the cupboard!)

i must not be "getting" what's going on here...

why would anyone ask others to "stop buying the R1"? it is the individual's choice.

chaque-un a son gout? is that correctly spelled?

live and let live?

prosumers w/fixed lens that are great lenses serve a very broad and useful group of users - like me!

dslr's are for a different group of users with different needs.

That all depends on whether or not you think the R-1 will be something of value after Sony comes out with thier own line of DSLR's. Looking at what the R-1 does when compared to the best now (Cannon Nikon etc), I think it will. It is a great all around camera and if it fits your shooting style it's worth every penny and more. I've posted some images here of the R-1, i've owned it since early Dec.

Hey, and when the Sony DSLR comes out, you should wait for the H-2, which will be just around the corner. And by the time that comes out, you should probably just wait for the announcement of the R-2. And then...

The worst photos are the ones you don't take because you're waiting for some piece of miracle technology to come down the line. I understand... the R1 isn't for everyone... but it seems to be working out quite well for a lot of people. Why anyone who wants this camera would wait for a phantom product of unknown quality/specs is beyond me. Think of the thousands of frames you could shoot in the meantime.

Do other forums get these repeated looks ahead for the next generation of technology or product to do all the work, or does the gadget-lover market that Sony reaches so well bring this element into the forum? I see so many posts here of people judging cameras off spec sheets, price lists and future-product rumormills, it's kinda astounding. I'm beginning to think many, many Sony fans are more fans of gadgetry than photography, more fans of technology than art, more fans of product than process. Weird. You don't see anyone telling people not to buy the Nikon D200 because the D300 will be better.

I wanted an R2, a fixed lens with same 24-120, or better range, but with b4etter autofocus and shot-to-shot time that matches closer to a DSLR's performance.

Dust issue and shutter lifetime of a dSLR is just very annoying. And image in optical viewfinder looked much better than image taken...using en EVF shows what you will get more accurately.

The lens of dSLR is also too damn expensive!!!!!

wish for r2:
-same lens, or better at the tele end. Actually i prefer 828's 28-200
-Image stabilizer (Steady Shot)

-Faster shot-to-shot and autofocus, at least as fast as Panasonic FZ5. Don't have to be as fast as Canon SLRs

Chosing a better posting title might have helped you to carry that point across quicker.

Chosing a dSLR over a prosumer camera is something you do for different reasons. People who bought the R1 already had a very fine selection of dSLR's to chose from and when they didn't, it's because they like the "R1 idea" more. It's not because they are brand loyalists to such an extent that they avoid dSLR's from other manufacturers simply to wait for one from Sony.

Besides, there is every chance that the new dSLR will be some form of repackaged Maxxum. Better sensor perhaps, better LCD on the back perhaps, something different in the lens mount perhaps, MemoryStick perhaps - but essentially with photographic functions and features carried over from the Maxxum. It's a logical choice.

I think this is not an good idd.
Simple fors your opinium to other peaple.
If some one wanted an dslr I think you can make an choise from every brand.
not sure wat you want to say.
Are you saying Sony will beat the Canon 350d or the olympus E500
or the nikon D70s
I thond think so.

Sony will make the furst dslr, and in my opinium its far from save to say the sony dslr will beat the other's
Also I am not sure wat the R1 have to do with an dslr any way.
The R1 may have an big censor but its not an dslr.
Peaple buying the R1 do not simple want an dslr, otherwize no single R1 was sold.

And now would I buy the R1 instead of an dslr
the answer is yes.
thad lens alone is the prize worth just like my E-10
it is 6 years old and work like new still i have 65000 pictures.
with it.
thads my idd :)

i was considering between 350D and R1 a while ago, finally decided to go for 350D.

Butnow I had my 350D, but I still wish I got the R1 as well. If only i have lot lots of money to spend, I'll get both, and pick one for each different situations.

an F2.8 24-120 with high quality glass is certainly more than $1K

A normal lens like canon 17-85IS already cost you around $600..., and that lens is F4

because the lens is designed to be so close to the sensor that there will be no room for a DSLR mirror.

I expect that DSLRs cheaper than the Nikon D200 using the sensor will soon become available.

I will wait until the upcoming photo show in February before making a purchase.

I want a live LCD viewable from any angle. I've already got a DSLR system and I'm tired of having to work with my nose pressed against the camera.

No it's not good advice. If one wants a DSLR there are plenty of choices availabe from known DSLR manufacturers. Why would anyone who wants a R1 wait for a Sony DSLR?????

I'm not sure that is good advice. If you want to wait for Sony's DSLR then great. The R1 is the first fixed lens DC that comes close to offering the image capability of a dslr. I am a Canon 20D owner and love my camera, but for my daughter, I'm going to get a R1.

But I don't want an SLR.

I can't use on in my work as I take pictures from positions where I can't get my eye behind the viewfinder.

I prefer composing with two eyes looking at a screen to one eye looking in a viewfinder anyway.

If you wait to buy until there isn't a better camera possible in the future, you'll never buy a camera at all.

I bought an R1. If I wanted an SLR I'd have bought one already, never mind waiting for Sony to introduce one. There are good SLRs available now.
