I was about to purchase a Fujifilm fineline S1 Pro to do macro photography of 300 or 400 small ceramic pieces 1.5 to 20 inches high (most about 6" high) when I heard an S2 version would be on the market very shortly.

I have a strobe setup and couldn't get good results with my nikon 990. I have an AF Micro Nikkor 105mm. My Nikon N70 got excellent results but I want the convenience of direct digital photography rather than scanning the finished photographs.

Has anyone heard anything about the fujifilm S2? I want to know whether to wait for the S2 or buy an S1 now. I want to start taking photos by mid November. Any suggestions about waiting or any suggestions about a different camera. I was attracted to the S1 because I have several nikon lenses and I liked the price.

Thanks.

I heard a successor to the Fuji S1 may be announced in February. I was told this on The Gary Fong seminar tour. He has no information on the new camera just that the future is bright for a new model.

You may want to buy the S1, use it then sell it when the new model comes out. It won't be worth as much but you used it for work. Try reselling a computer you bought 3 months ago..same story. If you can get your work done in the meantime, that's what counts.

Gary Fong doesn't like the Nikon D1h. He says white balance iis accurate only as long as you use flash.

I know this isn't quite polite since we are in the fuji forum but did you have a look at the Olympus E-10 ? It really shines with portraits and products and the price has gone really down lately due to the announcement of the E-20 :-)

I asked the same question last monday at a shop in Tokyo (at Shinjuku). The answer was that there would be a Nikon F-mount lens carrier in "D30 price range" in early 2002. By Nikon.
I'll wait and see.

We heard a lot of rumors about another DSLR by Nikon or Fujifilm. Who told you that? Did he say anything more? How many pixels? Is the focal length magnification x1.3 or x1.5?

Thank you for your info.
I think whoever comes up with a DSLR with 5MP+,Focal length magnification factor
We heard a lot of rumors about another DSLR by Nikon or Fujifilm.
So have I...
Who told you that?

Sorry, I don't have any more details. He was somewhat evasive
about the S2, and said nice things about the S1.

I appreciate the postings. Thanks. I broke down and bought the S1. Decided I didn't want to wait. So far as I am experimenting I love it. Simple to use. Didn't look at other cameras because I wanted to use my Nikon lens and spend under 3000.

I spoke to a Calumet rep in the UK. He told me the new Fuji S2 will be out Jan/Feb next year and will be based on a Nikon F90/S90 (now discontinued). There were no other details unfortunately, expect that Nikon are obviously flogging off another of their older models to be developed by Fuji digital. The F90 is a very good body however, and much more of a professional tool than the F60/S60 that the current Pro S1 is based on. Lets wait and see what Fuji come up with.......

Did the rep say anything about the sensor size and number of megapixels? I own a F90 and it is a very good camera and would be an excellent choice to base a digital camera around.

Sorry Ron

No more info than that. Based on an F90 because that is all Nikon would licence to Fuji. They don't want any serious competition for their own Digi cameras. All the rep said was the sensor would be larger. Now whether that is more pixels or physically larger so no more 1.5 times the focal length, I don't know. At least we that the colours will be fabulous. I could speculate, but that is all it would be.....Jan/Feb next year should be interesting though.

This could be interesting.....the first serious SLR made by Nikon and Kodak a couple of years ago used the N-90 body as a basis....there was no LCD screen though to preview the image and the flash was a real miserable affair, with our paper requiring us to use vivitar 283s to use because they worked better than SB 24s, 25s or 26s....
Nikon must have a bunch of old bodies they want to get rid of.....

well, that should at least provide for a stable platform.

question on price:
while the S1 still goes for $2800, (usa warranty) and introduction was
around $3.5k, thinking fuji will but at least another $1k on top,
what would put it in the $5k range again ....
where the Nikon D1x is already a proven workhorse.....
certainly with added resolution and a body with lens and flash support,

will make it a keeper, if fuji has learned to improve their customer support,... since it would still low on the rialiable chart, compared to a Nikon.

cheers, Robert Schultz
