I am trying to decide between purchasing a Lexar 160MB x10 Compact Flash and IBM 512MB Microdrive for Cannon G2. It appears both are about the same price, so Microdrive appears to be the better value. I have a desktop PC with WIN 98 2nd Edition, no available card slots but I do have USB ports. Questions:
1. Is 512MB IBM Microdrive compatible with Cannon G2 ?

2. How does IBM Microdrive interface to computer ? Do you have to install a card inside PC ? Will a card reader work as interface to PC via USB and if so how much do card readers cost ?--Terry White

IBM MD is same form factor as CF. Bios in MD makes all CF II capable devices see no difference in CF and MD. Download from Camera or card reader compatible with CF II.

As Phil mentions a lot of times.. the Microdrive has the cheapest $ MB cost compared to the Compact Flash cards and that is indeed true however one needs to remember that the Microdrive has moving parts and the solid-state Compact Flash does not hence the Microdrive will generate more heat and suck up more juice from your batts.
Anyway back to the questions...
1. Yes and officially supported.

2. Through the camera's USB connection or from a USB/Firewire CFII card reader..You don't need to install a card in the PC since it's a USB/Firewire reade, unless of course your PC doesn't have USB and you will need to add a USB card into it. Card readers are getting cheaper and with more support for the different types of media available. Get one that is small and compact so you can carry it around easily.
