Udate from KMSEA on Dyxum.

Bingo, this is why I say KM needs to at least make a statement on the 9D, FF or Not, and announce some lenses. Otherwise no one will buy the 7DII/7Di. But if KM comes out and says "here is the 10.3 MP APS-C 7Di, and coming in the fall is the 14MP Full Frame 9D" people will make their buying choice, since you know a full frame 9D will cost at least 3 grand. So people will go with the 7Di if they know the 9D is out of their range. Or people like us, will start buying the new lenses. And save for the 9D, and some point after it comes out buy it.

:o(

Well, Guess this means its the 11D , a 20 MP Full Framer with laser guidance and thrust vectoring stabilization :o)

So let's just wait. If there's nothing official at PMA, I'll get D200. I'm sick and tired of waiting and all this un-certainty.

If 7D is out of production and selling out on, that should be a sign that there is something new coming out. KM does not let their production lines stand stille for no reason.

I did put this question to my Konica Minolta UK contacts - if the 7D was being 'closed out' because of a new camera.

They then showed me the sales figures for the 5D and 7D, and it's totally obvious why the 7D has been given some special promotions in the UK. The 5D has become a best-seller - phenomenal sales figures - and I would say it has all but wiped out 7D sales for people converting from film Dynax to digital Dynax. I would say the 7D offer here is nothing to do with closeout, or getting rid of final stock, more to do with shifting stock that has stopped moving because the 5D has 'cannibalised' sales.

I have seen the large storeroom entirely packed with Dimage Master software going out free to 5D buyers - more than packed, the boxes of envelopes ready to mail were out into the passageway as well. I had to gather up any spare copies of our Photoworld magazine they had in their offices and carry them back on the flight home, because with the numbers they are sending out, I am going to run out of these magazines for the free 1 year subscription I have added to their promo deals.

Reading between the lines, they are bundling the VC grip free in the UK because they've got a large stock of grips - which are surprisingly expensive to manufacture, no idea why but they are. With everyone buying the 5D they are not going sell those grips in a hurry :-). They are giving away the 1Gb card from Kingston because Kingston made they an offer none of us here would refuse - and the card is fully up to to 7D speed specs. As far I can make out, this part of the current offer is just a very generous way of getting people to return their warranty cards. Most buyers never bother. A 1Gb card is a very good bribe and they have worked out they can afford it.

And... it just looks as if Konica Minolta UK hit exactly the right pre and post Christmas season timing for these promotions (5D ended Dec 31, 7D ends Jan 31).

This morning, following up the story about KM and Canon both pulling out of the Focus show in the UK, it seems that KM made this decision last year well in advance while Canon actually planned to be there and paid the money. They pulled out at after committing themselves, rather than build a stand and send staff there. I have no idea what this means, but a KM club member who called into my office this morning suggests it may be Canon putting their budget into TV advertising and pulling the plug on anything else.

It will be a peculiar show without them, because at this show there are two entrances. Canon's stand occupied all the space at one entrance, and KM/Minolta's stand has been at the other entrance for many years. Both have been large, distinctive, walk-through stands and the first thing which hit you on entering the halls.

I certainly don't have information that there will not be a new DSLR, or that the specs are not likely to match KMSEA's posts, or that Sony may not be doing something separate which is causing Konica Minolta to move in certain directions. All I have is the word that any of the predictions that have appeared on internet sites are not likely to match precisely what does appear, and that we should not be expecting photo shows as the most likely date for launches.

This does fit with my past experience - Minolta used to release products at unusual times, like two weeks before Christmas or in mid-January, and never held them back or rushed a pre-release announcement to 'spoil' the market. Konica Minolta is not the same company and may act differently, but they seem to be saying that at least in the UK, the launch of any product will be determined by the timing of the first shipments manufactured.

This is certainly a very strong indication that KM better get off their butts and release a 7Di. The current 7D and 5D have specs that are close enough that many people see little reason to spend more for the 7D.

My thoughts exactly. Good news is that 5D is selling well with very little advertising. I just hope that they won't make the mistake sacrificing their higher end cameras to produce cheap consumer slr's. again.

If Konica Minolta staff do read this forum, why don't they say anything?

B&H has a well deserved reputation amongst DPReview users, not least because Henry Posner tells us what's going on and straightens out snafus. I've become a loyal B&H shopper because of that attention to the customer.

Here we've got people who are thinking of abandoning the brand because they think Konica Minolta is tired of making cameras and lenses. What would it take for someone in authority to say "we're working on the development of X number of new lenses with this general configuration".

It bugs me that here's this great camera system, and here's this almost free method to communicate with thousands of enthusiasts who want this great camera system, yet we hear absolutely nothing from the company.

Really bugs me.

Not only do most of the makers read the forums on dPreview, some pay an agent to compile digests of posts and print them out for study. I found out that one of my former KM contracts now works for a large mobile phone company and his entire job is to predict what people want - including keeping a permanent eye/ear on internet.

dPreview could chuck me out - I have a commercial interest in Konica Minolta. You are not allowed to promote commercial interests here. Just by commenting I do so. If lots of content from camera makers/importers arrived here, Phil would have a real problem. He would end up being forced to pull threads. I guess I am harmless enough to be tolerated but I have been banned once.

Konica Minolta is definitely working on an entire new range of lenses. That I can tell you, because no-one has ever denied it, or suggested it is classified info. It is well known that the glass making plant and lens manufacturing in Japan shut down and was moved. I don't think they put it in a dumpster. For the last 20 years prior to Konica involvement, Minolta transferred all redundant machinery to new owners or partners in China, one reason why the Minolta MD mount system is a massive seller in China alongside the Nikon mount and the open-licence Pentax K mount. Anything you can still buy, anywhere, in the old MD system is now a Chinese product.

While it has never been openly confirmed or admitted, everyone 'in the know' believes that the former Minolta glass production (formulating and melting) and lens manufacturing plant is now located in China, that it has already produced some lenses, that the best of the former Japanese lens designs are being reintroduced from this origin, and that new lens designs will follow.

I don't know anyone at all who thinks that Konica Minolta has pulled out of making lenses and will not have a full and excellent lens range in the coming months - except a few posters here who interpret the enormous upheaval of a company merger, rationalisation of manufacture, and change from film to digital in an apocalyptic light.

You can't expect them to make public their timescales, range decisions, innovations, manufacturing strategy etc.

And, for what it's worth, you show me any other company which - with or without Tamron help - has a digital SLR lens range which matches the quality, specifications and price of the 11-18mm, 17-35mm, 28-75mm, and 18-200mm. Not to mention the superb budget 75-300mm and unrivalled APO 100-300mm, stupidly low cost 18-70mm - etc. The 50mm f1.7 and 1.4 have not been axed; the older G series is still currently listed, 17-35, 28-70, 70-200mm SSM etc; three macro lenses are still current (2 50s and one 100); the 85mm f1.4 G is out there, and although the 35mm f1.4 is not, a new one is promised in March.

I find the basic new digital lenses such a good overall set that I have just sold a cupboard full of older AF primes and zooms. I would not want new versions of these, because the very affordable current Digital format lenses (and the full format ones too) do a better job. I do want a 70-200mm SSM, but at the price here... another story entirely!

David

What does the new camera feel like? Seriously, I know you can't say anything, but why on earth would you not be a beta tester for KM? You run a magazine dedicated to them (and have for many years)...You (I assume) are/have been a pro photog for many years on top of that. You are clearly a competent individual interested in the best the digital world has to offer. Maybe the only thing I could think of is that you are too busy with your editing job, but I wouldn't think any sane person in your shoes could turn down a beta testing job ;)

So, I'm thinking they should owe you a 70-200 SSM so that you can properly test the new body for AF speed and precision as well as other fast shooting applications. I'll put in a good word, but I don't think I have much say with anyone who knows or cares...sorry.

Oh, BTW, for anyone who hasn't seen proof that KM employees frequent this board, you haven't been as fortunate as I :) Before a guy named Phil was widely known as THE contact for US residents, he contacted me after I posted about my problem with my Dimage 7i. He then sent me the part I needed at no cost... That was pretty much the deciding factor (oh yea, forgot AS) for why I upgraded to the A1. Then...dedicated flashes...now a whole lens lineup, and I don't think I'm going anywhere soon.

KM officials frequent the forums, no doubt. If nothing else, many of them are probably just regular photogs and may just frequent here as that. Also, just because you are a KM employee doesn't mean you know the inner workings of the company's plans...unless you are a Japanese engineer perhaps.

David,

I very much agree with your post. I think much of the doomsday stuff is over rated.

I have to be honest that I personally have no reason to believe you over KM SEA on whats coming. You could both be full of it, one could be right one could be wrong. Or what I'm more inclined to believe is you are both right for the most part but have heard different things from different peoples and different parts of the story as things filter down through. I'm just a skeptic.

Your lens comments were very interesting. The new lens lineup seams obvious. And I hope it pans out. I'm curious about your comments on the current status of the G 17-35, 28-70 and such. No one list them anymore and KM doesn't even list them on the website. They would seam to be as dead as they get. But at anyrate, it would seam they need at the least a new digital re-fresh.

The going ons of Minolta, their lens production and so forth seam to make for the basis of a good novel. Think Tom Clancy would ever start covering the Camera industry?

I just want to see some new stuff coming. Especially lenses. A camera company doesn't need a 1000 lenses. But they should have a lineup that doesn't leave people looking for stuff.

Also the comments on the 5D vs 7D seam just as expected. Clearly the 2 compete, and with the 5D it was ment to get the 7D upgraded, I would think that just happened slowly.

I never had much interest in the vertical grip, but if KM wants to get rid of them, I'd take one for free, I'm just not going to buy the camera for one. How about just offering them really cheap. Say 50 bucks.

I for one cannot shoot anymore withou the grip. I shoot a lot in portrait and my hands are big and finger long. 5D is a pain to handle.

And 7D with a grip looks damn butch as well ;-)

I have big hands and such, but the vertical grip for me would be a pain most the time. Makes camera heavier, and I just can't see much use of it. I take lots of vertical shots with no issue. And when I'm doing things really right, thats why my camera has a L bracket on it permanently (never has been removed since the day I put it on).

Multi billion dollar corporations do not merge
Of course. How could I forget that Konica and Minolta are still different entities.
it takes years
Of course, and the process has just begun.

The companies will not merge, but Sony will buy KM's camera division, or a joint company will be formed. Just wait. And, by the way, I said this as soon as i read the press release about "cooperation"; what KM SEA has to say in the matter doesn't interest me.
