Has anyone details of non Sony remote cable release for R1? - Sony models have extra features not useable with R1 (such as power zoom) and are bulky/expensive.

There have been reports of Sony's own tripod-mounted remote controls on certain tripods =other than= the VCT-D*80RM series being suited only to Sony camcorders and not still digicams. LANC is a broad protocol, and there's no guarantee that a particular instruction set will apply to all similar products using it. Third-party flash manufacturers have been tripped up by this, for example, while Sony has always taken care to maintain both backward and forward compatibility with its remotes and flashes.
Any LANC remote unit will work on Sony's cameras

The RM-VD1 is anything but expensive (unless the UK distributor is setting new standards in extortion), and so small as to be downright fiddly. It actually costs less than this adapter (which doesn't include a standard cable release):

At the other end of the scale there's this, which AFAIK is available in the UK but not the US (FCC issues):

I stand corrected. What I meant is LANC remote controllers designated to work with digital cameras and not just camcorders.

Such controllers will have the shutter switch emulate the one on the camera, having two positions - half press and full press.
