Returned iMac G5

Lucky you. Had my iMac G5 only just under a month and there is no such service here in Australia. Only consolation is to get iLife06. Have calmed down about the whole thing and must take Apple off as my home page (slap in the face seeing both models and the same price). This is my first Mac and took a while to save up for and was going to be fot the next three years. Latest tiger update finally enabled my Canon 350d (xt rebel to u guys) CR2's. Now I am converting Raws, it is slower than a 3.2G PC I was looking at buying.
I am one unhappy New Mac user.
Any more like me out there?

Has anyone got anything to say about the different graphics cards used between the two models?

What are you using to convert your .CR2s? If you are using the Canon software, it is a known fact that the Mac version of the Canon software is slower than the PC version. They have not optimized it. Why not try another raw convertor. Try the new public beta of LightRoom. It is very fast, and for now, it is free. And I think the converter in Lightroom is the new standard for convertors. The convertor in PSCS2 is likewise, very fast and flexibile. Also, Photoshop Elements 3 uses the same convertor as CS2.

Frankly, as with any new technology, there will be growing pains with the new Intel boxes. For early adopters, maybe some of the things they will have to go through will be acceptable to them. But if you are easily frustrated with small problems, then you are much better off with current technology that is tested and stable and has tons of software available that runs natively on the 64 bit processor included. I think many of the claims for the new Intel processor architecture are inflated and referr to "as much as" twice as fast. I suspect that you might see significant improvements from the video card, but I don't expect that you would see a large improvement in general processing speed. Don't get caught in the Steve Jobs reality distortion field. Enjoy your computer. OSX is still the best operating system under the sun.

Thanks Alpha,

although I do like the latest gear for a budget this iMac was going to see me through for the next three years or so, Much grovelling and saving has enabled me to buy something that I thought was fairly current, only to be beaten by three weeks ( this is what got my goat. )
My local Apple shop will see if i can get the iPhoto 06 for $15 anyways.
Cheers

You know, it isn't going to stop working just because there is an Intel version out there. If you look at benchmarks, you can see that the real world performance difference is considerably less than marketing (who a few months ago were telling you that G5s blow off Intel, so take it with a LARGE pinch of salt) would have you believe.

The G5 iMac is a well sorted machine, and believe me, early adopters on Apple hardware (not to mention software) often get bitten. A Rev 1 of anything from Apple tends to be sub-optimal. You may actually have bought at exactly the right time.

Finally, you do realise that people are going to charge for upgrades to universal binary (Intel native) application versions, do you ? You could actually be saving quite a lot of money.

It might look gloomy, but there really is a silver lining :-)

feel your pain mate--i hate when that happens (it's happened to me twice now). but usually it doesn't really affect me 'cause i tend to wait for the latest and greatest and then buy the top o the line previous model at a discount.

but at least i get the discount... ;)

I love Apple products but I have learned NEVER buy a machine in the prior to MacWorld because there will almost always be an announcement and as luck would have it, it will probably be EXACTLY the machine you just bought. ;)

Good luck with the new iMac.

I do not see why they will not let you return it with a 10% restocking fee.....did you have Applecare on it?

If you plead with a manager you can usually get exeptions, and if you order a new one at their store they get the credit.....remind the manager of that.

Spiritman :)

Why on earth did you shell our for a new Mac with the rumour mill strongly indicating new Intel based Macs in January?

I have patiently held on to my G4 iMac for the last six months knowing that sometime soon a newer, faster, better Intel based Mac will come along.

I always try to buy second hand but this might be the year I buy a NEW iMac - it seems fantastic!

i agree it sucks...

but from there side...a returned i mac g5 isint giong to get sold at full price. and they will sell the intelmac. so it simply does hurt the store that takes it back...in that way. except it should make a cutomer greatful who will help apple in the long run.

Fair call Dave. Hindsight I believe has the words ass and obvious included. It has only recently become clear how these launches operate. Knew about the intels coming out but a graphic designer mate said they usually happen mid year. Then another 3 months till it hits our shores. This is my first Mac and it took a lot of brave pills to buy one. Now that I have spent 4 weeks having a great experience with them it hit me a bit harder I guess than anyone who knows about the Mac world routine and their release schedules.

Now it's a case of knuckling down and using my Mac and demanding to at least get iLife 06.

Thanks Dave. No such thing as a restocking fee here in Australia. Apple itself provides a 7 day full return policy but it's way to late for that. Went down this weekend to voice my opinion but it has fallenon deaf ears. Will tomorrow call customer support and talk to someone in charge.

This is true and that's why the dealers are not wanting to be stuck with a 4 week or 1 minute old Mac out of the box. Will plead insanity tomorrow.
Cheers Nick

I hav no doubt that your new iMac will serve you well for at least three years. Then you can get the next "latest & greatest" machine. Just know that when you buy that one, it will soon be replaced once again. The only solution is to either never buy a computer, or else work for Apple.

Working for Apple only works if you're up the food chain a bit. Otherwise, you wind up using the rumor sites to find out what's happening.
