Hello,

I was wondering what people thought of pbase and snugmug? any huge differences or any preferences of one over the other?

I started out with pbase, and I am now using smugmug. I like smugmug a tad better. It's simple to use. I think it is just a matter of personal preference as to which one to use. I think the name smugmug is sort of catchy.

Hi,

I started with pBase and like it OK. There are a lot of really good photographers posting there so it is a nice place to browse and learn. You can set up groups (sorta like favorites) to keep track of the photographer's galleries you visit. I also like the camera database. I've not tried other sites so I really can't compare them with pbase.

I think they are both good but as one who has smugmug I would have to recommend them over pbase. The Pbase server seems to go down often and that is frustrating for any that want to view your pictures. Smugmug has the absolute best customer service if you have any questions which is a rarity in todays world. They have many other good features as well. They both offer free trials so sign up for them and see which you like best. Use this discount code

for smugmug and you'll get a discount if you decide to go with them and I'll get a discount when I renew. Good Luck with your decision.

Posting a picture from smugmug is easy: first you locate your picture, then click the "share photo: link, forum, blog" link. You will be shown a list of links to your same picture, they only differ by size (tiny, thumbnail, small, medium, and large). Just copy that link to your post on a line by itself and you will have it.

When I researched for a photo hosting service, I looked at PBase and decided not to like it because it has some sort of limit per month. Although I don't think I will run into that limit, I like smugmug for not having it. The lack of limitation means I can upload almost* all of my photos there in their full size so that if I need the originals later on, I can always order them on backup DVDs.
  • Let me explain why I said almost: smugmug has a limit on the size of each gallery or album. That means if I have lots of photos, I have to split them up in two or more galleries; or I can scale the pictures down to fit.

Hello there.

I moved from the free flickr to smugmug when I gone over the storage limit. I chose it because I like the feel of the site, that it is run by some creative and innovative people. And their customer support is really fast and helpful. No experience with pbase but at a glance found its looks professional but dull.

Why not flickr ? I use it and I love it.

I was looking for a place to host my photos, after doing some research I picked up flickr.

About posting different sizes, it so very easy with flickr:

Hello,

Here you can find an interesting overview of the most important photo sharing sites: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6451_7-6245143-1.html

I have been comparing them for some time before i decided to go for smugmug because of the positve comments of users here on dpreview, and the fact that PC MAGAZINE chose smugmug as “Editor’s Choice”.

Standard account is $29.95/ year, which gives you:
  • unlimited storage space !
  • full res download permitted
  • elegant and sophisticated gallery styles
  • no ads or spam, etc…
Smugmug offers a free 7 day trial (According to the website 9 out of ten stay). If you subscribre and use my code RexaramzeghMy or you use this link you save $5 on your subscription: http://www.smugmug.com/?referrer=RexaramzeghMy

Good luck,

I have PBase and smugmug. I like smugmug because if you get the power user account you can code your webspace to appear as if it really is your own website. Its not very much money for a year. I haven't had smugmug very long but I am pretty happy with it-- I like it best. I hope to change the look of my space as I learn more about css. Right now it is very simple as you can see:

PBase is pretty good but there are problems with it that I felt were insurmountable for me. Others may find it stimulating. Also, although I have a broadband connection, I found the site to be exceedingly slow and unresponsive at times.

I have a free Flickr account and I like it just fine.

That was a good one-- made me smile.

Flickr is good and I use it too. But I prefer pbase/smugmug's layout. IMHO Flickr is more like a personal album thing instead of a "porfolio"-like showdown.

Sorry folks, but I virtually DESPISE smugmug. And all of the other "welcome to small-sized pictures and unwieldy interfaces" sites that are similar to smugmug.

I could care less about "me" as a "user" -- I'm talking about "ease of use" for the folks who visit my galleries.

With PBase, you just select the size of picture you like, and PBase remembers it, and you just go forth and browse pictures. If you want to switch to another size, it's quick and easy, and once again you're just straight on your way.

OH, FOR CRYING OUT STINKING LOUD when it comes to smugmug and its "open a different-sized picture in its own window which doesn't even STINKING TRY to match the dimensions of the picture" interface. BLEAH!!

Please, spare me from "buy this photo" and "shopping carts" and all that insanity -- just let me browse through the pictures without all that fuss and bother. Which is exactly what PBase does -- it's simple and elegant. Wonderful!

And, I'm more than happy with PBase when it comes to "my" needs for posting pictures and deciding how they'll be displayed. Yes, PBase has had a few "growing pains" over the years, but for the most part it has been completely reliable and plenty fast to display galleries and images.

Hehehe, now go ahead and start with the "please tell us how you REALLY feel about smugmug" comments. :-) I know we all have different attitudes toward this stuff, but I'm just completely happy with PBase, and I usually wind up virtually yelling at my monitor whenever I have to fight with smugmug to see anything other than "small" sized pictures.

One of the most important features of online galleries for users of dpreview forums is the ability to search for pictures by camera. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems to me that only PBase offers this.

I'm a pBase user, and will continue to be so for the forseeable future - they certainly have improved steadily in the past year, but their reliability i.e. uptime is still not quite at the level where I'd like them to be.

Hopefully this will only get better. Other than that, I like all the other aspects of the site.
