I have just aquired this camera and when in Manual mode I can turn the dial and adjust my shutter speed accordingly but which button lets me adjust my aperture so that I can control both shutter and aperture as you should be able to do in Manual.
The instruction manual is a bit vague.

Many Thanks.

Make sure the on switch is in the 2nd "on" postion, and use the Thumb Wheel on the back of the camera for aperture control. (Which also controls the exposure compensation when in Tv or Av mode)

Thanks a million Bob!!

That ON switch was only in position one and not the second and as you rightly said that was what the problem was.

I never noticed that in the handbook although I think you need a magnifying glass to read it.

Everything working great now!!

Thanks again.

Coming from the fully manual Canon F-1 and my 1970 Leica rangefinder the 5D and previously the 20D have taken me a while to get comfortable with. And they aren't as user friendly when you want to use them in full manual mode as the older cameras were.

But I'm now finding it pretty quick to work with the camera all manual. I keep in in spot meter mode. I set all my lenses to autofocus. But I also set custom function 04 to option 1, so the camera only autofocuses when I press the * button with my thumb. For the most part I focus manually, but it's nice to have that autofocus available on occasions. This only works with USM lenses by the way. I set it so that only the central AF point is active.

In terms of user friendliness it's no F-1, but it's pretty close. And of course it does one or two things the F-1 dreamed of. ;-)
