F707 vs. G2 Faceoff (Full Zoom Portraits)

Bryan--try Pondria's test of DOF in the other thread with your G2 -- we'll then see the comparison between 505v, 707, G2 and D30!

This test shows the degree of blur--important in portraiture photography.

Thanks,
MAC
OK, all of you who have been waiting for the F707 to kick some
major butt will now have your day. Since getting the G2, I've
tried hard to get satisfying closeup portraits, but havn't been
bowled over by the results. The F707 is a different picture
entirely.

Not only did I not have to work as hard, being several steps back
meant my kids would keep playing, instead of posing for the shots.

This all started with the first shot that I did of a neighbor and
her new baby, and everyone went wild when I brought out the print.
Heck, even I was impressed with the print... who wouldn't be?

Anyway, these shots will make my decision much harder. Again we're
dealing with my opinions here in the captions, but I couldn't help
being impressed with the F707. If the pictures don't show it, you
should have been taking them... it was really easy with that
camera, something that I probably can't show very well.

I'm warming to the EVF on the Sony, by the way. I'm still not
really fond of it, and prefer to use the LCD for composition (yeah,
I know... I'm weird), but the LCD on the F707 is nearly unusable in
full daylight. The G2's is still very bright and clear.

Let me know your thoughts, but again, please be kind. :)

Thanks.

What Travis is talking about, I think, is how with larger sensor cameras (like the D30) when you're not in macro mode, the DOF drops off faster. I've taken some portraits at max focal length and fairly wide apertures and been surprised by how much of the background is still in focus with my S85.

Actually, the D30 is "the portrait machine" when it comes down to
shallow depth of field (that many are obviously looking for).
Sorry I don't understand this. DOF depends on the aperture you use.
If you want a blurred background, simply use aperture priority, set
to the minimum (f/2.4 at full zoom). I have portraits of my son
(

;) where the eyes are
razor sharp, but the tip of his nose and his ears are nicely out of
focus... how shallower do you want to get??

Thanks again, Bryan. To me, these just reaffirm the themes we've been seeing. I love the 707 sharpness, but I strongly prefer the G2 color. If only Sony gave us more control over the color...

Thanks for the close up photos Bryan Siverly! It confirms what I also have been getting from close up portrait type shots with my F707. I think the F707 excels in this area. As for the colors, what can I say, the Sony colors don't bother me and make things look vivid and lifelike years on down the road when you've forgotten for sure what the true reality colors were like.

Not a critical point to my personally. But the BFS quirk... irks me and I wish that Sony would fix it for us F707 keepers.

Thanks for all your hard work once again showing the comparo shots!

For fear of starting another Color War, I might say that there are
some who prefer the softer look of the G2 portraits. I myself do
not and I see that you do not either.
Ed, I don't manage softness, if the detail can be exposed. However, in most of the G2 shots, I did everything I could to try to get the sharpest shots, and they were still slightly off. I also don't like it that I can get glasses in focus but not the mouth... it's just odd. If I keep the G2, I'll have to live with that.
It is nice to see that you have found another thing to like about
the F707. I'm sure that this is going to make your decision even
more difficult. I am sure, though, that whichever camera you decise
to keep will give you much enjoyment.
Sure does make it difficult... although there are issues that may be killers for me no matter how good the portraits are. The blue cast that I can correct in Photoshop doesn't bother me, nor does the color (as much). However, the issue that I cannot get anything other than f2.0 or so in flash photography is an oversight I'm not sure I can live with.

Bryan,

I'm almost at the point of purchasing the Canon G2 (I also own the Contax G2 and Nikon LS-4000), taking into account that I can use the 550EX I own (from EOS 3 traded for the Contax), its capability of using the microdrive instead of MS as well as its lower price than the F707. Your test do make my decision much much harder!! The portraits do stunned me. Great test!! Shall I wait for the Nikon 5000?! or get the F707(G2?!).

Edwin CHAN
