what kind of CF card for XT?

I would say speed only matters if you are taking multiple shots, say sports/birds etc. But for the little extra I would highly recommend Sandisk Ultra 2 series CF cards. They are noticibly faster when saving when out on the field, and when scanning through photos on the camera, the ultra 2 has a clear edge in that you can view quickly.

Also, the buffer is huge - i tested before I bought once and it was still taking photos over and above 50 shutter presses, and that was in Large RAW format.

All my CF cards are sandisk, and have mixes of type 1 and 2. Both are good and get the job done, but because type 2s are not that much more I would recommend them.
Cheers
does the speed matter?

If yes, then what speed to allow the camera's maximum potential?

thanks

Cards rated @ 6 - 10MB/sec write speed is what you want. Any less and the camera will be waiting on them. Any more and you are wasting your money (unless offload to the computer speed is real important).

The ideal cards would be the Sandisk Ultra II or the Kingston Elite Pro 50X.

You could also get the Extreme III which is a little faster but a bit more expensive. Bang for the buck, the Ultra II is probably the best buy for the XT (I doubt you could tell the difference between the Ultra II and the Extreme III unless you are shooting RAW; even then doubtful). Check out Rob Galbraith's comparison of memory cards with the XT.

The Sandisk Extremes ares supposed to be more robust cards than the Ultras.

The Sandisk Extreme III is currently the fastest card for the XT. Whether you can tell the speed difference is doubtful when comparing to the older Extreme or the Ultra II.

All of the cards down to the Lexar Pro Series 2GB 80X are within 5% of the Extreme III 1GB for large fine JPEG.

If you are shooting RAW, you might notice a difference beyond the top three cards if you are shooting RAW (even here it is doubtful).

I will see at the store tomorrow, if the price difference is steep, I'll go for the slower ultraII

thanks for the information! u are amazing

I have been using Sandisk brand CF cards ever since I got into digital photography and am proud to say that they truly are very dependable. I didn't bother to go with those 'Extreme' or 'Pro' types because I don't need them.

This is what I have and it is capable enough to do anything:

I have both the regular and Ultra IIs.

Besides the extra speed, there is lifetime warranty on the Ultra IIs versus 5 years on the standard versions.

Well if you only going to shot some photos the memory speed is not that important. Even when shoting on burst mode the card speed has a litle to do with that. The cameras interal memory is more important in that case. But still, with a fast memory card you will be able to download your pictures to the memory card when the digital camera's internal memory is full and then continue to with the burst mode. It will also take less time to transfer the pictures to your computer.

Thanks for all the input :)

Extreme 3 is a bit too much for me.

I got it for $140, maybe quite expensive, while 2GB ms duo is only 150
